got a new parts washer, 20 gal w/ pump.

what kind of solvent should I use in it. On the lid there's a warning that says not to use mineral spirits or other flammable solvents "permanent damage will be done to the pump".

any ideas, I looked on Grainger.com and they have some kind of solvent (expensive). I also looked at Harbor Frieght and they have some kind of concentrate that you mix, I think it is granular.

I always use Kerosene.

I use mineral spirits paint thinner. Its a couple of bucks a gallon and doesnt have a fowl aroma. Its not real agressive as a solvent but it also doesnt strip all the oil out of the skin on your hands

A big consideration in what you use is how are you going to get rid of the dirty solution . Some people have recyclers they pay to take it off thier hands ($$$$) . I use a regular degreasing solution that I get from a small fuel supplier , pay $2.50 a gal and it works well with just a slight kerosene type odor. I know a guy that uses the harbor freight concentrate that you mix with water , its not has good at cleaning but when he has dirty solution he puts it in a big bucket in his yard and when the water evaporates , just removes the sludge , much easier to get rid of .

I've seen this solvent available at Advance Auto so you might check with some of the parts stores. It was in a 5 gallon metal container but I didn't get the price.

I used a biodregradeable one with citrus...it corroded my aluminum parts left in it for a while. Mineral Spirits is what is in the washer now.

I'll check out NAPA and the Farm Co-op.

The parts I have to wash aren't real dirty. This is the second washing, I did the 1st one the old fashion way in a big plastic tub. This is the washing before I but my VW engine back together. But the next motor I tear down will be very greasy.

I use parts washer solvent made by Castrol; comes in a five gallon plastic bucket and runs $20+ per bucket. You can get it at some of the "better " parts houses, not the cheapo chain stores. I can get you the Castrol part niumber if you want it.
