Re: got me a new grill

Great find! That one is a newer NOS shell. You should check the other one to see if it is like the originals. My red truck has new GM put in 1990, but that style is slightly different than the originals. The grill on the black in pics is the original 69/70 style. I'd love to have an original style for myself.

Re: got me a new grill

You can find the NOS Outer Grilles for the 70's...But in my recent search for a NOS Outer Grlle Insert most all inner Grilles are the 69 style and not 70. I found that out when I went to purchase a 70 Inner Grille. I called various places and they all said.."oh we got a 70 inner grille insert". But once they checked they all had the 69 style. FYI

The 69 style does have the indentations for the black stripes-you could rub off the silver paint or paint it

Re: got me a new grill

I am not sure I have this correct but I think the 70 inner grille insert has verticle bars and the 69 does not. Some one had pics of the difference but I can't find it. Not a big deal but there is a physical difference if I remember.

I read that wrong.I thought you were talking about the accent on the outer.The`70 inner has silver accented raised horizontal fins.

Re: got me a new grill

The`70 grille has 12 sections of 4 raised fins accented in silver:

To be correct you`d need to cut/grind all areas in black to recess behind the parts painted silver.I guess from a distance, and to an untrained eye,you could just paint to simulate a`70 grille.I`d paint rather than remove the black. The fins are silver and the plastice would be dull grey at best.Possibly, those are done in a black plactic since they are all black. That`s what I`d think.

Re: got me a new grill

NYC-10 is correct. All repro grills that I've seen are actually '70 style grills. They have the the raised fins, but are not painted. All of the parts house list them as 69/70 grill, I have seen a a correct '69 grill. The silver on the '70 grills is painted on the top of the fins, it is not the color of the plastic. I had a vendor tell me that '69 had the fins from factory, but they weren't painted like the 70's. This is not true, because the 2 pics below are of a '69 and a '70 wearing factory paint. The '69 is flat across the fins.

Even this site states "The "egg-crate" inner grilles are identical in design on both the 1969 and 1970, but a different paint scheme makes them appear different." NOT TRUE!!! I have (4) 69's and (3) 70's here to look at and they are all consistant. None of the 69's have the fins.

Re: got me a new grill

NYC-10, since your grill is a NOS GM and painted the '69 color, it makes me wonder if GM didn't start using the '70 as a replacement for the '69 also. They are so close in design that most people would never notice. At a glance they do look the same. Either way, I guess that's good for people restoring '70 models!
