smog question's on a 76 k/5

i've been looking at a 76 k5 4x4 but it need's to be smoged. i have never really messed with a truck, that need smog so the smog is all new to me. i don't know were any-thing goes or what's soposed to be there. i noticed that there is no smog pump, so i know i will need that also noticed there was no cat's on the exhaust system. but what else is there??.............the gentlemen that is selling the blazer say's that it's a small block 400, bored 30 r.v it has long tube headder's will tis motor even pass smog like this.

You may have to check into it, but I think after 25 or 30 years the you do not have to run all the smog stuff. Or are you just wanting it stock again? And I don't think they had cats on them back then, I think most of the smog started in 78.

But just look in to it for your state.

Re: smog question's on a 76 k/5

thank's tvblazer78.. well it has not been taged in 2 year's, the gentlemen that is selling the blazer stats that it need's to be smoged. but there is no smog equiment in under the hood at all . i would like to buy it but don't know to much about the smog. i don't want to buy it and me not be able to smog it. so iam trying to find out how hard it is to put all smog equiment it a 76 blazer to pass smog.

.........another thing is if i do figure the smog problem out and get this all hooked up. the blazer has a small bock 400, 30 over with r.v cam headder will this motor even pass smog with all the smog equiment hooked up;

I did a quick google. You might not need to depending on your county, but I would check with your local testing station. Any vehicle 1976 or newer. You will most likely need an air pump and cat. You will probably need to have an evap system too. I'm pretty sure you could get a 400 in a blazer in '76 so that will be ok.

Remove the gas cap and look down the filler neck. If it is wide open it did not come with cats. If it has a restfictor or a little flapper like late models have it came factory with cats. I had a 78 blazer that had cats. I took a filler neck from a 74 and never had to install cats...

Re: smog question's on a 76 k/5

Google California DMV and read about buying a vehicle. It has to be smogged, but the buyer is responsible for getting it done before he sells it. You go to a state approved smog check station. They pass/fail it, and the station reports it to California DMV electronically; as in right then over the internet.

If it fails you should back out of the deal. Cali has a visible smoke fail too. So if it smokes, it fails. You got to fiix it before you can put it on the road. Probably why the guy is talking about smoggin it, and not doing it.

Not to be a jerk, But how do you live in Ca and not know about smog inspections? Do you only have vehicles that are exempt or do you drive a vehicle that is less then six years old? Again, not trying to put you down, just curious?

Re: smog question's on a 76 k/5

OK. Thank you. Most people in MN have to upgrade to newer vehicles when their car rusts. It takes a really good heater to make up for holes in the floor pan in January.
