Truck #s
Please exuse my ignorance, but i'm new to the old truck scene. Is there a website or a post that give info as to how many truck came from the factory with 396/402, how many were SWB or LWB?
I'm just interested in some of that info, see how rare the SWB 396 trucks were. I did a search, but came up with nothing. Thanks Glen |

Welcome to the site. I've seen production numbers for the totals of shortbeds, longbeds, 1/2 tons, 3/4 tons, etc. but never for motor/tranny combos. I would think it would be a small percentage; less than 5%, I would think. Maybe someone will chime in with production numbers.

I don't think you will be able to break it down that close. If anyone knows, longhornman will chime in.
either way, an original short, big block truck is fairly rare.

Thats what i was looking for in the way of info, just something to read up on. Never seen a SWB BB truck other than here, i am completely amazed at that. To bad you can't by that package today.

The older the truck the fewer there were. My RED BOOK list the 327 as an option in 67 and then in 68 the 396BB was an option. in 1970 it went to a 402 BB. The 402 BB were more commmon in 71-72 then 67-68. Documentation is lacking as far as numbers but I would agree with dan42 that only about 5-7% had factory BB's. It is intereting to note the RED Book list in 1969 the engine options has 396BB and 402BB engines while the 70 model years list only the 402BB. Go figure.

The 402 did not come out until 1970. They are simply 396's bored .030 over. The 396 blocks were cast with imperfections that year, so rather than scrap them, GM simply changed them to 402's. This was told to me by a former GM worker.
