SBC 327 Compression

What (In PSI) Should the compression be of a 60's corvette 327 engine be. I am getting anywhere from 120-135 psi.

Re: SBC 327 Compression

I think it's more about the consistently of the compression levels between the cylinders. If you're getting a +/- 7 psi spread @ ~125 psi, I think you're ok.

Re: SBC 327 Compression

this is what I had when I first checked mine the first month i bought it, (68 327)

1 - 160 2 - 165
3 - 165 4 - 170
5 - 170 6 - 165
7 - 170 8 - 160

as stated above, its more important to note separation between cylinders than anything, many things can vary how "MUCH" compression you have.

GL,

Re: SBC 327 Compression

Compression ratio and camshaft can greatly affect compression test numbers. Generally 125 is showing a worn engine but its evenly worn and I wouldnt worry about getting a good bit more mileage out of it. If your looking to do upgrades such as new heads or a cam swap for more performance etc. I would wait until you can do a full rebuild. A lot of those 60' engines were above 10-1 compression which should definately show more than what your getting. Im not saying the engine is worn out but I wouldnt be doing performance upgrades or be out beating on it.
