Low Budget '70 C-10

My Father in-law had a 1970 C-10 sitting in his backyard, it was a project he lost intrest in so he gave it to me. This truck runs and drives, it has a 350 with 305 heads, long tube headers and a 650 4 bbl carb. the trans is a rebuilt th 400. It has rust around the windshield and in the cowl box, as well as the doors and rocker panels. I plan on using this truck as a daily driver and to haul my boat down to the water, so this is more of a rat rod build. so far I have put a carb. on it (used- $150) and a windsheild seal ($40)

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

I'm looking to buy paint, does anyone know how much I will need to paint the whole truck inside and out except for the inside of the bed. Also, whats a good "rat rod black" I've used eastwood's rat rod black on a motorcycle, but I had to reduce it down and it still looked like it was rolled on ( lots of orange peel) Ive heard alot about the JD Blitz Black, but im not sure if it will work over an epoxy primer and can you paint overtop of it like pinstriping or flames.

What did you do for the rust around the windshield? I just took the windshield off my 67 and its pretty rusty around the top of it, but I havnt taken a look behind the roof or behind it.

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

I went to the hardware store and bought a peice of 22 ga. steel and used some paper to make templets then cut out the steel and welded it in. Its not perfect but this is also not going to be a show truck.

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

This is the driverside after grinding down the welds, I shot some primer on before a storm rolled in, just needs a little filler and it will look like new.

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

Put on some filler and then painted the windshield frame with the "rat rod black" that I had left over, not sure if I like the color.

I don't know what I would do without rust converter, I've tried every brand out there, and this stuff works the best.

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

I removed the bed today and installed the windshield, I read that you should install the seal to the frame then install the glass, but that didn't go so good, so I installed it to the glass then the frame, easy as pie.

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

Nice work on the repairs. I've read good things about the Blitx black. Saw a Hot Rod Flatz red job in person that was very smooth just not glossy so I imagine the black could be also.

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

Think I might stay with the rat rod black, I like to use Eastwood for my paint supplies, they have really fast shipping, and the prices are good, I also just ordered a rocker panel and cab corner from LMC.

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

Just got the Pass. side rocker and cab corner, I bought them from LMC and they are very nice. they fit perfect and look like they are 18 ga. steel. Here is my buddy Justin cutting off the old rocker ( whats left of it) and putting the new one into place.

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

Just put the driverside door and fender on, then started doing a little body work, but that turned into alot of body work, my father inlaw made a rocker panel for the driverside by cutting a peice of pipe lengwise into quarters ( exhaust from a big rig) then he just welded it in with to door off. It will probably last forever but it doesn't line up. the bottom of the door also had alot of filler in it, so I just added more, someday I will fix it right, but for now it will do. To fix the door/rocker, I used 1/8 in steel flat stock between the door/rocker with painters tape on it, when the filler cured, I pulled it out and sanded smooth. I also am taking off all the trim ( truck didn't have any on it) so I'm filling the holes with a MIG welder and using a little body filler to smooth them out.

I'm thinking about shaving the door handles and locks, what does everyone think about this?

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

I found a caddy 472 for free, but this truck will be a daily driver, so I think I will keep the 350, probably gonna put the caddy eng. in my firebird.

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

Today I MIG welded the holes for the trim on the driverside, and I cut out filler peices for side lights and MIG welded them in, then skim coated with a little filler, looks nice and smooth now.

Re: Low Budget '70 C-10

Today I worked under the dash. There is a big hole rusted through on both sides under the dash. I wire wheeled the rust off, brushed on some rust converter, then slaped on some fiberglass mat. Then it started to rain so I had to call it a day. I will use some green fiberglass resin jelly to smooth it all out. I didn't feel like taking the time to make filler peices out of steel and welding it all together, the area it sturdy so I just wanted to keep the water out and I had fiberglass laying around, so that keeps the price down.

If you're still looking for an affordable Hot Rod Black, try Kirker Paints. $53 a gallon and $17 for the Activator. I used their Orange Candy and it looks great.
