454 differences

I may have a chance to upgrade to a big block. Looking at a couple now and wondering is a 454 from 1978 pretty much the same as a 454 from 1985? The heads and maybe the cam will be different as the '78 was rated at about 205 hp vs the '85 rating at 230 hp and torque differences accordingly. Are they the same block and accessories for the most part stock speaking? Any other differences?

I believe so. Seems like heads will be the big diff. From about '73 on they are all low compression haulers.

Some of the earlier bbc's may have had oval port heads and flat top pistons, the laters ones are usually dished piston, peanut port heads. Depending on what your looking to do either is a good base. I've got a habit of picking up bbc's when I can. Good luck, Ron
