1982 454 swap
Hey guys. I have an 82 Chevy 4x4 project that had a 305 in it. I've also got an 84 1- ton 4x4 with a 454 in it. I want the 454 in the 82. How hard will that be? I'm pretty knowledgable when it comes to this stuff, just never done this part of it. I've got quotes from $500-$1500. I'd like to do it myself. Hopefully it will bolt right up.......??

Re: 1982 454 swap
When you say $500-$1500....do you mean labor charges? Couple of things to think about. First is that it's all of the little things that can be so darn time consuming. You have exhaust issues. I haven't been under the hood of anything newer than about '73 in a long time but electrical can get tricky. One big question is what trans does that 305 have in it? You have to be careful because you can wreck a weak trans in a big heavy rig like that if it's anything other than a TH400, 4L80E or the like. You can certainly do it but it might be at the expense of a few potty mouth words along the way! lol

Re: 1982 454 swap
Yea that was labor. Im not sure on the tranny. I will check on that tonight and let you know. Thanks for the reply. I might just say a few choice words and do it. Im building this truck kinda crazy. It started out as a 82 chevy SWB 2wd. Bought a '78 4wd frame and drivetrain. So when its all said and done it will be a SWB, 454, and 1 ton axles underneath.....we shall see

That's going to be a lot of mass to get turning. Make darn sure your trans is up to task or don't even do it. You will destroy a TH350, 700R4 and the like.

Well the truck has a th350 in it. Fresh rebuild so I'm told. Found a $800 receipt in glove box 2 months old from tranny shop

Re: 1982 454 swap
The 1 ton 4x4 should have a th400 and 205 or a sm465 and 205 if its original. You could just swap the whole unit over to the 82 because those would definately be better than the th350

Re: 1982 454 swap
IT also doesn't matter if it was just rebuilt. It's still rebuilt with TH350 components and they are not up to task with the typical TORQUE a 454 will put out. Combine that with the driveline back strength and weight of the 1 ton axle and the weak link will be the TH350. Do you have AAA? ;o)
