Is there any reason I can't and or shouldn't weld a cpp notch on instead of bolting it on ?

Re: Notch question

No reason at all. It is a great idea, use the holes for fillet welds.

Re: Notch question

I would bolt first then weld, there may be a reason it's a "bolt in kit".
