71 gmc

Good morning,
Yesturday I was out junk yard shopping, and I found a 71 GMC with disk brakes, automatic and power steering gearbox. Was wondering what you guys think weather this would be a good candidate for my disk brake conversion? If so, what do I all need to get off of it, besides the calipers, rotors, and spindles? Do I still need to get the upper and lower control arms, steering linkages? Thanks for all your help.

Re: 71 gmc

Yes if it is the same as your truck[1/2 to1/2 ton]. Every thing from the frame rail out. Plus the brake proportion valve [under the master cyl] and the master cyl and booster[if your doesn't have one] or get it anyway and then sell it on here to some one wanting to change to power. Brake line brackets any little possible thing that even remotly look like it could be different grab it you won't regret it when you change over. also welcome aboard the board. Jim

I would just unbolt the whole front cross member and take it home. That way you wouldn't forget anything... Then you could either swap the whole cross member or remove the parts you need. (plus the extra parts Jim mentioned)

Re: 71 gmc

Get the 5-bolt rear axles and drums, if they're available and they fit ('71 had the wider rear axle). Then, the question of 'what rims do I run?' comes up on the agenda.

Re: 71 gmc

Im going to change it over to five lug anyway. I thought the rear end is wider on the 71's, versus the 68?
