Is the NSS wire absolutely necessary

Buttoning up some loose ends and was wondering if this wire is necessary for the engine to run. Motor/computer are 2004 LQ9 dbw, trans is a 2005 4L80, harness is a BP Automotive Premium harness, and the truck is an '86. The switch on the bottom of the column only has the plug for the back up lights. The truck was originally a 3 speed on the column, so I believe it had a switch on the clutch pedal that only allowed it to start if the pedal was pressed down.

Re: Is the NSS wire absolutely necessary

I don't have an NSS at all. I think my shifter has one, but I never bothered to hook it up (but I'm on auto). On a manual, its a good idea just for idiot proofing...but its not physically required for the truck to start (boats don't have NSS for example)

Re: Is the NSS wire absolutely necessary

Ever seen somebody reach in the window and start their car while its in gear? I have, and its not pretty...... That said,, some columns have a physical lock out in any gear but neural and park, meaning they wont turn to the crank position in drive, I was thinking an 86 would be that way.See if it will turn in gear, if not you shouldnt need it.
