curious about a transmission!

Hi fellers! Im about to buy back the first truck i ever owned. I got it when i was 13 and had to sell it when i was 16 and i turn 27 in march. Its a 1972 chevy c10 with a 350 and 350 turbo tranny. The guy i sold it to has kept it the whole time and is selling it back to me. It is sitting in his back yard because of a tranny problem. It has the smaller grant steering wheel so one day while riding down the road he went to throw his arm up on the wheel and knocked it into reverse. He says now the transmission will go into low and reverse but thats it. Im wondering what could have happened and how it can be fixed! I would appreciate any help!

Rebuild time. The TH350 is possibly the most mass produced tranny GM ever made. There are thousands and thousands and thousands of them out there. Which also means parts are cheap.

Re: curious about a transmission!

Are you saying that it will go into drive and not shift out of first? When he put it in reverse it may have broke the plastic governor gear. Clutches can slip before major parts brake. Those critters are tough.

Re: curious about a transmission!

I'm not saying that something couldn't have gotten muffed up, but the governor is a super easy check. If the transmission won't go into gear with the shifter in drive but it will in low, you have other issues. Take a look at the fluid as well and smell it. That can tell a lot.
