5L40e/6L45e Tranny swap in 65 C10

Anyone ever had experience with or can point me to a thread about bolting on a 5L40e or 6L45e tranny to a SCB V8? Thanks.

never heard of a 5l40e. I know there are 4l60e, 4l65e,4l70e,4l80e, 6l80e and maybe a couple others.

Oh and I think the LT1's had 4l60's but not sure about the "e"

This 5L40e in particular is from a 2003 Cadillac CTS. I guess they're more prevalent in BMW's. But they definitely exist. What do you know about the other models you listed?

The 4l65e is the same as a 4l60e other than the 5 gear planetary, but externally is the same. The 4l60e is just the newer name for the 700r4. Look up 700r4 swaps and you'll find what you are looking for.

You'll need to figure out the TC lockup, and make sure you modify your carburetor for the correct geometry for the TV cable. You'll need to get the transmission cross member moved back a bit. You'll also likely either need to convert to mechanical speedometer on the tranny or to electronic speedometer on the dash.

The most difficult of any of it is deciding on the torque converter lockup type, or if you're going to even use it.

Re: 5L40e/6L45e Tranny swap in 65 C10

The 4L60E does not have a TV cable as the 700R4's do. The 'E' suffix indicates an electronically controlled trans. This means the transmission will not operate without either a OEM PCM or an aftermarket controller.

I have not heard of the 5L40E or the 6L45E either. A quick google search revealed that the 5L40E trans is rated at only 250 lbft, so it may not be suitable for use behind a small block.
