250 i6 to 283 swap

Hi guys i just purchased a 64 chevy c10 this morning and the 6 c cylinder has a terrible knock. The po threw in a nice 283 with the truck for a replacement. I have been reading some about motor mounts being the same. I just want to make sure it will line up with my powerglide, motor mounts on the frame, and not require much for change in wiring or brand new radiator. Also will the motor mounts off the 250 fit on the 283 or will i have to buy new ones. Thanks.

Re: 250 i6 to 283 swap

The motor mounts themselves are the same, and the motor mount brackets on the frame are in the correct location. You do not need the motor mount brackets that are between the block and the actual motor mounts on the 250. The radiator for the 250 is likely the smaller radiator that sits down on the lower part of the radiator crossmember, between the frame rails. The 283 will physically fit, as long as it still has a short water pump. However it is possible that you could have cooling issues. You will not be able to run a fan shroud with the 250 radiator. If you do have cooling issues, you will have to upgrade to the V8 style radiator and a shroud. The wiring will be slightly different between the 250 and the 283. It is just a matter of purchasing the correct harness for a V8 and plugging it into the firewall.

You will need new radiator mounts if you change to a V8 rad. Found that out today during mock up. I'm in the middle of that swap myself.

Good to know as well. It has a brand new radiator the po just put in it so i hope it is good enough to handle the stock 283.
