Manual tranny question

I installed a new clutch, pressure plate and through-out bearing 7 years ago. They have been exposed to the elements since (no engine or front clip). Are these components still usable, or should I reinvest in new again?

Re: Manual tranny question

You could probably take them out & sand the surfaces down to remove the rust. If they are real crudy you will need to replace them.

Re: Manual tranny question

Depends on how bad they are. Pressure plate can be resurfaced to save a few bucks. Throwout bearing is a sealed unit and could possibly still be useful but I'd probably replace it anyway. Clutch plate? depends on how many miles put on it.

If in doubt about all the parts, I agree with above posts to scrap and replace.

Re: Manual tranny question

Sell those parts on Craigslist and buy new parts. Let it be someone else's problem and get started finishing your truck -- lol, rather than sanding rust. Those parts are hard to access, and if the elements have rusted them, I wouldn't want to have to deal with stupid issues after spending tons of time and money getting the rest of the truck done. Then again, don't install new parts unless you have time and money to finish the truck. Leave them on the shelf this time.

Re: Manual tranny question

Good advice, thanks, this site rocks! I was hoping to use the parts on my daily driver because the truck with the new/old clutch is now a parts truck.

I got that he had installed it and then got rid of the engine and front clip and parts were left out exposed to weather.

Re: Manual tranny question

Sounds like they would be just hanging on the trans spline unless thrown on the ground. Seems like your eye would know right away if they are any good or not. Too bad you didn't take care of them and removed them from outside. Are we understanding this right?

Re: Manual tranny question

68gmsee is right. I took the front clip for another project, scrapped the 6 cyl engine.
