49 GMC 300 with a 12 valve Cummins

Just started my build. I have a running 49 GMC 300 and a running 93 Dodge Ram 250. My plan is to take the body off the 49 and transplant onto the dodge chassis. I went with the 300 because of the width of the bigger fenders and it is rust free. I have a bed from a 3600 that I plan on stretching to fit.

Here is a link on how to do it.

What are your plans for this rig? Hauler, driver, show truck, cruiser? I always wanted to do an identical swap as yours but with a 55.2 Chevy 6400. Why did you go with a Ve pump cummins instead of a p pump? Sounds like a sweet project. Be cool if you had a pickup bed trailer to match. Look forward to the progress and hope to see the finished result

Re: 49 GMC 300 with a 12 valve Cummins

I'm building the truck for a daily driver. It having a VE pump was luck of the draw. I work at a diesel pickup shop and the boss bought the truck for parts. He was told the trans was out and it didn't have a title. I was getting ready to pull some parts for another truck and asked if he would sell me the engine. He told me I could have the whole truck for $1000. I took that offer quick. One of the trans cooler lines had a hole and leaked all the fluid out. Fixed it and the truck runs and drives like a dream.

That's a great deal even if it does have the ve pump. This will be a cool swap, love those old 12 valves

Sweet. I am finishing up a 48 Chevy truck with a cummins 4bt and a 5 speed trans. I love the cummins swaps. Something different for sure.

Re: 49 GMC 300 with a 12 valve Cummins

I'm interested to see how the body fits on the doge chassis. I'm a little worried the bigger fenders and wheel openings wont look right. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Re: 49 GMC 300 with a 12 valve Cummins

Why not box the GMC frame and put the cummins in it? Be easier to title, no cab mounts to fab, etc. If it's the brakes and suspension, I'd think it might be easier to put the dodge axles on it. And please, keep it a dually! Old big trucks like this don't look right as single wheels IMO. Good luck, I'm tuning in to watch this build

The thought has crossed my mind but the plan is for a daily driver. If I was to use the 49 frame I would have to box it in, shorten it, swap rear axle, and I would have to figure out something with the front suspension and brakes. I have a good title for the 49. I do hate to tear this old truck apart but I'm having a hard time finding a cab that's rust free and complete for a reasonable price. I do have a 49 Chevy 3600 but the cab is just a rusted shell. The doors, fenders and hood are in great shape. I'm just going with the flow on this build. Nothing is set in stone. All input is welcome and appreciated.

Re: 49 GMC 300 with a 12 valve Cummins

I think it'll work out well with the Dodge Chassis and the larger truck's wider and longer fenders.

This truck is a Ford version of what you're doing. It had the Dodge chassis and 5.9 in it, and the guy said all he had to do to package it like that was to have the wheels re-centered with more backspacing. It had wheel spacers on the dana 70 to get the large dana 70 hubs to fit under the rear center caps.

Wow, it's a small world. The owner of that ford just brought it to the shop I work at today. I seen it pull up on a trailer and knew it was the same truck. The truck was built here in Hutchinson Kansas. I talked to the guy for awhile. The truck was bought new by the guys father or father-in-law.

Re: 49 GMC 300 with a 12 valve Cummins

I'll give you a little bit to think about. There are a couple of important measurements that are givens and can't really be altered. One would be firewall to center of front hub.Another is firewall to radiator.Hopefully you can find someone who has put your Cummins in an AD truck. If not it's going to be a lot of measuring and test fitting of components to see what will physically fit within those given dimensions. All of this is going to determine if the cab firewall needs to be notched, how much of a transmission tunnel you may need, what kind of pulleys and accessories you can use on the engine, what to do for motor mounts, how to mount the radiator.

That is just the beginning. And yes,Big Truck fenders look silly with small tires,I would say you need 34" or better.

Re: 49 GMC 300 with a 12 valve Cummins

Great project! I have pictures of a 11/2ton on a dodge chassis.it will fit. Your radiator will take some work and the tube from turbo to intake may need some work as well( too high)
I have a 12 valve in a p-30 that I was going to try to stuff into a 49 3600. The 49 is complete and a family truck, so I have decided against so much surgery to the firewall to make 12valve fit...that project has been turned into a long term one. In the meantime, I'm looking for a 1 1/2-2 ton front end to stick onto p-30 frame. Tire width is still an issue though... May just find a 52-53 cab and make the p-30 a r-rod instead. Check out the diesel conversions page on here. Also, another member, M.E. has put a 12valve in an s-10 frame with a 52-3 chevy body. You should be able to find him with a search. Good luck. Look forward to watching the build progress.
