Auto column shifting question shortening column...

If I slide my tilt all the way back to the cluster am I going to have a problem with my linkage between the column and Transmission? Am I going to need to lengthen the Rod between? Thanks, Rod.

There should be some room for adjustment. Check at the column and down at the trans arm.

If it looks to be short, easiest way would be to cut the rod and use a sleeve to lengthen.

Sorry, I've got nothing factory anymore.

I am in the middle of a build so I have nothing together. I just wanted to know f it would clear everything or if I needed to alter the shift arm on the column.

Nobody here has done this? I borrowed this pic. This is how my column will look slid all the way back.

At the most you may have readjust the linkage but as far a s cutting it to lengthen I'm gonna say no. Jim

I guess I should add that I have power brakes. The booster is what concerns me. Will the shift linkage hit the booster before it gets to park?

Re: Auto column shifting question shortening column...

The shift arm will not hit the booster. My column is about 3" farther in, maybe slightly more. I am not running the reverse light/ neutral safety switch, so the hole in the column is sealed and pretty much inside the firewall. The picture below is only about 2" shortened, I pushed it farther forward after the picture and still works.

If you are hearing from people who have done this..... and seeing pictures of finished columns..... then it can be done. You may have to just dive in and figure it out.

The reason I can't be of too much help is because I'm not factory. I've got a CPP column with a splined end, running a universal joint to a Jeep Cherokee steering shaft which I cut down to fit. Your steering shaft will have to be shortened, how you do it. The linkage I used is from Lokar, because I can make it do whatever I want it to on it's way to my 4L65e.

Re: Auto column shifting question shortening column...

Here is the Lokar arm, which works on lots of trans. Also using a modified Lokar reverse light switch. With the column as far in as it is, I'm safely maxed out of the linkage. If I wanted to move the arm down more, I would need to cut and length the shift rod from the column. Thing shifts smooth out of park though and down to 1st gear, so unless it needs adjustment for the gear indicator to line up.... I probably wont touch it.
