Trying to build a kayak trailer

I would like to build a trailer for my two kayaks. I was thinking of going to the junkyard and buying an axle off a small car and then just building a frame to fit my purposes.

Does anyone know of a good donor vehicle to target? I'm looking for a simple straight axle around 4 - 5 feet wide. My intent is to be able to tow this behind my wife's little Honda Accord. I've never really bothered to look to closely at axles on little bitty cars and have no idea which may be decent to use.

maybe find a old beat up pop up camper,, and use the frame/axle to start with.. those are usually pretty cheap

Not a bad idea. I live in Southern Louisiana. I might be battling rust issues on the frame with something like that. I'll keep my eyes open, though. Thanks.

Harbor fright, Northern Tool, and others have small trailer kits. Small frame, axels and tow bar, you add the wood deck sort of things. It's not like Kayaks are heavy.

Good thing you live in the warm South, 'cause if you get cold kayaking, there is not much you can do about it. You just can't have your kayak and heat it too.

Yeah, when the trout come into the marsh, it gets pretty awesome. There's really only about two months out of the year that kayaking isn't an option (as easily anyway). That's mostly due to wind, not cold.

On the flip side, the summers are a touch HOT down here. I have to bring so much water with me, I end up with about an inch of freeboard.
