Coil relocation

Where is everyone relocating the coils on 67-72? Looking for ideas.

mine are in stock location but long term plans are to move them to back side of intake/heads out of sight.

I saw someone else had relocated them to the inside of the frame rail and I'm planning on doing the same.

There is a commonly available relocation "panel" that holds 4 coils on a angle-iron looking peice,and bolts it to an unused stud-boss in the back of the heads. You need a lot of firewall clearance for that tho. Relocation TO the firewall is also a cool option, but just requires a little planning. The same type of bracket/panel mentioned can bolt to the firewall, only downside being that the firewall is stationary, and the engine is not (i.e sizing the length of the wires is important so you don't tug on them under load)

If you just don't want to see them, I would consider one of two options.
1. just use an engine cover. You don't really see the coils much under it, unless you look from an extreme-side angle.
2. use the fake-valvecover coil covers. They look like an old high-lift valvecover, just like you might see on an sbc/bbc...except the added height fits OVER the old valvecover and hides the coil packs.




Sadly, this is a beautiful motor with nice parts....and then they slapped the MAF right on the TB....go figure.

I made brackets to mount them to the one of the engine mount bolts.

I am going to be running different coils this year, so I'm selling these brackets and/or coils if anyone wants them. They probably won't work on an N/A setup though...

Wasted do you not drive it in the rain? or worry about water on the road splashing up on them? You could just make up a shield to protect them from that.

They will be fine. I had them down low last year and drove it in the rain with zero issues.

They are pretty weather resistant, the harness leads to the coil are the weak link. Driven with no hood for a while, so I'm pretty confident in the LS's weatherproofing hehe.

Tell me about the high tension wires, where did you get them, and where did you mount the brackets on the plenum?

The wires are a cut your own kit from taylor that I got from a local store, but the coil plugs are special for ls engines so I ordered them from summit (part# 46069) to make My own kit.
the brackets that hold the coils make a 90 degree turn at the bottom and the bolt down with the same bolts as the fuel rail.

A quick note on Taylor wires, if you use them (which is fine, I have some now), but they are sensitive to being pulled out by the wire. Even when grabbing by the boot, be careful that it doesn't seperate from the wire. This is an issue on some of the 9.8mm and 8.5mm wires with the silicon body. IF you pull it by the wire, it stretches and thins out, enough to slip out of the boot. Some high temp glue or silicon might help, haven't tried it.

The plug wires with the firmer rubber or reinforced silicon aren't as prone to it.

man i just did that on an MSD wire. yankin on it all sideways when i was too tired to think clearly. sucks to roast a $60 wire set because dumb.

Better to hear about it than to find out first hand. I can see how it can happen with them though. The casing does slide around and they can become very tight on the plug.

As for custom length plug wires, I measured what I needed, and got some custom length Firecore 50 wires.

Will some dielectric grease on the plug/boot help with removal?

It'll never hurt. The problem seems to be between the boot and the wire, since the boot itself is only slip-fit on most plug wires.

MSD's are horrible about coming apart, too.

The Firecore wires come highly recommended by lots of racers who are pulling the boost off of the plugs often between rounds. They bond the boot to the wire, and it is supposed to help keep them from pulling the terminal ends off.
