Need new heads (350) best upgrade for "stock" app?

I need to buy a new set of heads as my old ones are, well, terrible. Any input on which ones I should look at? The engine is all stock with a semi fresh rebuild. The engine is in a 1980 Blazer bush pig.

Vortec heads are a good flowing head but you may need to get a vortec manifold.

I'm searching junk yards for a set of Vortec heads. Found one set the other day (Just didn't have the money at the time) $44.00 + $10.00 core each. these had the "Saw tooth" 12558062 casting. Most people will agree these are the best flowing stock heads Chevy ever produced.

Vortec heads are great flowing stock heads, but require a vortec specific intake manifold and in a stock condition will not take more than 0.450 valve lift. Also, OE vortec heads are prone to cracking between adjacent exhaust ports. I had toss two sets into recycle bin after magnaflaxing showed cracks.

What about aftermarket heads, something I can drop onto a stock 350 that will gain maybe a little hp. Or would y'all suggest getting the stock heads ported and polished?

Maybe get your stock ones machined to 2.02/1.60 valves and port and polish. You'd definitely gain some horsepower.

Most of the engine machine shop around me have oem sbc heads that they sell, fresh valve job and re-surfaced. Ready to bolt and at a good price.

Summit sells upgraded Vortecs cheap compared to other heads for the hp level.

I've done the Vortec head search in junk yards.. I pulled 6 heads and only found one that wasn't cracked. Inspect them closely. I ended up buying one new one to go with the rebuilt used one.

Yes, they all showed a propensity to crack between the intake and exhaust valves in one of the interior cylinders. Mostly #3 or #4 hole..

One thing to consider... if this engine is all original and has a lot of miles on it, and you throw a new set of heads on it with new valves and seals... you will start sucking oil past the rings.

Re: Need new heads (350) best upgrade for "stock" app?

As much as I hate the imported crap... If your going to do Vortecs, do this

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...make/chevrolet

You can not buy used, put new valves, seats, springs, guides, seals and retainers and cut for .52 lift,,, into a used set for this! (about $630)

You would still need the required Vortec intake, and self aligning rockers, but it's a no brainer for a vortec move. This skips the headache of the worn out nearly 2 decade old production Vortec heads you find in scrap yards. (L31 was only in 96-99 models)

Myself I have 2 vortec motors (one for towing , 383 with RHS Vortecs, one for cruising 327 with Edelbrock E-tec's) Honestly all the hype is just that IMPO,, HYPE. They are just a good flowing STOCK PRODUCTION HEAD,,, nothing special.

If you want something significantly more than STOCK PRODUCTION stuff,, it's going to get into your pocket WELL more than the Vortecs.
but, just my 2¢

Yea, basically I want a set of heads that will flow better, maybe a little more hp that won't alter the compression ratio and that will work with stock components. I have heard good things about the edelbrock aluminium ones.

Re: Need new heads (350) best upgrade for "stock" app?

I did vortec heads last auagust. My 350 was stock besides flat top pistons. Also did a slightly larger than stock cam. Had to do the intake too. Wow, compression went thru the roof. Truck will burn tires now amd lots louder.

I spent over 1000 though and thays not inclusing heads. They were free. Intake, gaskets, cam springs etc.Intake was only like 150 bucks. I love the swap wiuld rec it to anyone
