Oil pump going out

On my 87, I drove it around today. The check engine soon light comes on after I drive it a bit. It's done it before, thought it was because it would hear up a little. Well flushed the system today. Was clean, VERY CLEAN. Reason it heated up, (ashamed) the was not enough water in it... Well put it all back together, no more heating up. The check engine soon light came back on. I did notice the oil gauge (stock ) was bouncing around the 10-30 but staying below the 30. When it settled was around the 10. No clattering from the valves etc... I'm thinking it's either clogged or the pump is giving out. What do y'all think. I know, I need to hook up a mechanical gauge to be for sure... Just fired with engine light and the gauge.... Probably oil pump

Re: Oil pump going out

Oil pumps are the one thing in your motor that will never wear out.
The releif spring can get stuck or the pickup clogged with junk or the pickup fall off or move.

Re: Oil pump going out

I guess I will change the Oil sender first. The jumping gauge might be what triggering the service engine soon light

Re: Oil pump going out

Your "service engine soon" light is not hooked to the oil system in any way.

But your symptoms sound like a bad sending unit.

Re: Oil pump going out

those idiot lights are often wrong, plus in 80s GM computers were nearly brain dead.

SES light has been on in my 86 Firebird for 13 years, only thing broke is the light.

That means that the computer only sees it in closed loop. Early systems did not have a heated o2 sensor. What this means in the real world is that the computer operated in a basic limp home style mode(not actual limp) when cold. Once the O2 came up to temp the computer would start to read the sensor and adjust everything as it should. The later is called closed loop.

Re: Oil pump going out

both of these sites are for OBD2, isnt an 87 OBD1....also, it does not tell me how to get the codes....

sorry, Im just not real familiar with these elctronis ones.... im about to pull it all out and convert is to CARB and HEI..... one thing i did notice, it idles to low when at operating temperature......

something else, I did remove the A.I.R. system, but if I remember correctly, the came on before as well, and ws told it would not mess with the computer system. I never drive this truck much, only on weekends is why its popping up now

Re: Oil pump going out

Connect A to B with a wire or paperclip. Turn key on but don't start the truck.

Count the flashes of the check engine light.

They will have a pattern.

For instance flash, flash, flash, flash....pause.....flash, flash

Would be a code 42. Get it ? Four flashes in a row, a pause, then two flashes

Report back what you find.

Re: Oil pump going out

^^^
It should repeat each code 3 times and end with a code 12. 12 just means that it is the end of the codes and has no meaning.

Re: Oil pump going out

Nope, Springtown. A little place with one red light about 30 miles west of Fort Worth.

Most people think I live in Spring and I'm some kind of hipster when I call it Springtown. Not the case at all.

[QUOTE=Gumby;6715513]If your destination is Hell, Michigan; aren’t they all highways to Hell?

The main street in Springtown is Hwy 199, In Fort Worth we call it Highway to Hell. http://fwtx.com/articles/highway-hell
