disk swap steering thing relacement

Spent the last two weekend muddling through the swap. Was I supposed to replace this part also? We still have the 1970 version of this thing on the front end. It didnt seem to need to be swaped out. But maybe it should have.

The disk brake steering is different than the drum brake steering, it uses completely different parts, I don't know what you have done so far to try to adapt it but when I changed mine over I used all of the disc brake steering parts instead of trying to mess around with adapting the old drum brake steering parts.

Re: disk swap steering thing relacement

What year spindles do you have?
It all needs to match.

The old theory that everything has to be disc brake parts is not true anymore.
Since all drop spindle and standard spindle manufacturers now sell 60-62 and 63-70 spindles for disc brakes.

The OP would need to use 63-70 conversions spindles to make all of his drum brake "steering parts" work.
The other option is to use tie rod adapter sleeves, which opens another can of worms.

Let us know which year spindles you are trying to bolt on your 70 truck.

Re: disk swap steering thing relacement

The spindles are off the 72 c20 front end. The steering thing I took a picture of is part of that entire front end off the 72.

Thank you for your input. I sure hope we dont need that part. Everything seemed to bolt right up without ever disconnecting that steering thing.

Re: disk swap steering thing relacement

As far as I know the inner and outer tie rods aren't the same I'm confused on how you managed to bolt the inner tie rods up to the drum brakes center link.
BTW the "steering thing" you are referring to is called the center link, idler arm, idler arm support and pitman arm.
To answer your earlier question yes you should use ALL the 1972 steering parts.

Nah you aren't in over your head, as far as upgrades go this is about as easy as they come.
You need to check the tie rods for slop, they should be tight when you rotate them with no play in them at all and if they have some slop in them you need to replace them, Moog makes good quality replacements that are inexpensive, you can order them at your local O'Reilly's.

If the tie rods are good but the dust boots are shot you need to replace the boots, here are good quality inexpensive replacements in two different colors just in case you have a preference, you can order them at your local O'Reilly's.

Black 9.13119G
