Flew to Arizona and drove it back! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Been on here a while, had a 69 k10 body shop screwed me over on, sold to try to recoup money with a baby on the way. Fast forward a year and a half I had to find me another one, I never even got to drive the 69. So I searched for a while for a good rust free body just to keep original and drive. I found this 72 gmc in Arizona from the original owner, it had 71k miles on it. The 92 year old man would just drive it to take trash to the dump in recent years. I thought about shipping but decided why not, I’m gonna drive it (I live in central Florida). I flew out there and 2,180 miles later (46 hours) it was home, the 350 runs great and I was getting 14 miles to the gallon. It was a great time and now I have a rust free truck in Florida. Needs a couple cosmetic things but I’m happy with it. Here’s a couple pictures.

All right! That's great. The way things have been as of late you probably had more problems with the airline than the truck.

I did something similar once, it was a nice little adventure for me. You really get to shakedown a vehicle with a road trip like that, too. I remember listening intently for every squeak and rattle.

Yea it sure was a fun experience, you really get to learn the trucks quirks on that long trip. I’ll post some more pictures after the weekend of interior etc. I’m going to have to get a little list together of the things I need, as you can see one trim piece is missing etc. One things for sure, Texas is a long state to drive across on I-10

I remember driving I-10 from Fl. to San Antonio & back years ago.. miles of concrete road w/expansion joints... CLOPPITY-CLOPPITY-CLOPPITY-CLOP....

well done! I only had to drive my C20 and hour and a half on her "test drive." Although I did just pick up a '96 2-door Tahoe from south TX and did a 14 hour shakedown drive back. You learn a lot about a new-to-you truck in 14 hours...

Cool story great truck!

Drove my 69 Nova from Mississippi to Washington State once and had to cross Texas...I was beginning to think that place was its own country!

Somewhere along the way a header bolt or two came loose and it sounded just like a rod knock!

Glad you made it home without a hitch.
