gasman's 87 r10 build

as it sits now

first box of parts showed up. Moog ball joints, tie rod ends, pitman and Iidler arms, etc. It's starting now so I'll be updating this constantly.

Re: gasman's 87 r10 build

put in some new updated head lights and my headlight buckets were rusted to poop. I found some in the junkyard that just hard surface rust so I got them, sand blasted them, and painted them gloss black. Didn't get a shot of them painted but here is the blasting before and after.
scored a mint drivers side vent window when I was out pulling the headlight buckets too.

and I got some custom center cap stickers for my wheels. They are aluminum and are pretty ridgid. Really nice for $20.

Sure wish I had the chance to start with a nice clean southern truck like that. Looks like the beginning of a badass looking truck, can't wait to see it a little lower. Keeping the wheels or going with something different?

a-arms blasted clean for paint. They are ccurrently at the machine shop getting ball joints pressed in. I'll be hanging on to these wheels for now. Depending on how low it sits and when I bag it I may change them and get some 20s with better offsets.

installed a a arm bushings today. Scored the bushing holder with a sawzall then used a punch to bend them and then knocked them out.

Re: gasman's 87 r10 build

I've hit a road block. I ordered the DJM spindles that matched my rotor size and the inner bearings are too small for the axle.

here's the spindles
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/dj...-size/5-7l-350

here's the bearings
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tmk-set6

and here are my rotors
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...-size/5-7l-350

for some reason I think I ordered rear rotors when my truck has drums. dammit

Now I'm all effed up. Apparently summit directed me to the wrong spindles so I have nothing that matches up.

Re: gasman's 87 r10 build

the djm spindles were 1/4 inch thinner at the tab that floats over the rotor where the caliper bolts on. This part number says it's for the 1.25 rotor trucks but it needs a SET5 bearing. Summit/autozone/orielly all return a part # SET6 for my inner bearing but they don't work. The stock rotors I bought at autozone took a SET5 bearing too. so pissed.

Re: gasman's 87 r10 build

Ok so do the auto zone rotors and summit rotors both fit SET5 bearings? If so than the spindles are obviously wrong. I have the light duty brakes on my truck and my spindles look much more like the djm's than your stock spindles do, SO summit probably mislabeled the spindles as a 1.25" heavy duty brake model instead of light duty.

got partially done. Front is just springs with my original spindles, back is the bracket from specialtyretail here. Doesn't sit to bad but I want the front lower for sure.

Re: gasman's 87 r10 build

The summit part number overview states you have 1" rotors and the DJM drop spindles are 1.25". looks to me like you have the wrong rotors........? Get the 1.25" rotors would be my choice

Got 1.25 rotors and the bearings that fit them and they still wouldn't go on the spindles.

Re: gasman's 87 r10 build

I'm horrible at taking pictures and keeping up with this. I have 3" spindles and 3" springs in, the front end is completely rebuilts, fender wells are pulled, fenders rolled, but now I gotta do something about the fender wells and inner fender area that is too close to my wheels. Wish these things had a little higher offset. I think they are +19..... a +30 or 40 would be beneficial right now.

before

after

i know... the pics aren't good. I'll get some nice ones soon. It's almost spring here in the panhandle and the beach would be a sweet backdrop.

next is exhaust, because my factory pipes are really close to the ground now. Gonna do a simple true dual from the manifolds back.
