64 PG to 200r4 questions

I can get an overdrive out of a mid 80's Cutlass fairly cheap and was wondering what all was involved ir replacing the powerglide in my 64 swb panel. Are there any electronics I have to worry about? Not going to worry about a column shift - probably going to use a Lokar shifter. Driveshaft length?? Crossmember mount?

I can't answer your more important questions, but I can say the 200-4R is about the same length as a short tail TH350. There were no electronics to worry about. I have a Bowtie Overdrives 200-4R in my 66. I can take measurements and pics when I get back home in a week. If you can wait that long.

You are going to need the install kit for the TV cable and something for the torque converter lockup. You should be able to use the same trans crossmember. It might need to be moved back, don't know for sure. The driveshaft length will need to be determined once the trans is installed.

Re: 64 PG to 200r4 questions

I think there are some difference in the mounting bolts on Buick/Pontiac/Olds(BOP) and the chevy transmissions.

Nope, Jbarron is correct, it's called a BOP bell housing for Buick, Old and Pontiac. Chevy was the odd-ball (go figure)
Adapters to make the BOP trans fit a Chevy block runs about $100-$150

Re: 64 PG to 200r4 questions

I had one in my 65 elco. can't remember but some had a duel bolt pattern? might have been a t350. x-member has to move back a little, d/s should be ok plus the tv cable and lock-up as was said. I had a non lock-up TCI converter in mine but you have to mod the trans for that.

Re: 64 PG to 200r4 questions

Yes, but its a moot point because the 200-4R has the BOP & Chevy bell housings. Captainfab is right that you will need an adjustable TV cable and provisions for the torque converter lockup solenoid. Also the cross member will need to be relocated.

Plus, the 200-4R doesn't suffer from the same design flaw that makes 700-R4s useless past a certain power threshold. I'd suggest googling Art Carr and why he loves the 200-4R. The differences make it a superior transmission in my opinion.

Some (Very Few) are NOT a Uni-Bell case & are BOP ONLY, Got to watch out for that.

Not going to get into the 700R4 vs 200-4R debate.

While that's true, from my research (which is by no means utterly exhaustive or absolute), its unlikely to be the case.

Not trying to instigate a massive debate on the matter, but if you have something that contradicts that, I'd like to know. I have been a 200-4R believer since 2006, after demolishing 700s and 4L60es. I have also been wrong before. I legitimately would like to learn more.

Edit: that being said, if you would like, I have no problem PMing you my email address so as to not derail the thread.

Re: 64 PG to 200r4 questions

I have done tranny swaps before, but I'm still in the info-gathering stage for my 70 GMC. I'm liking the 200 because of the ratios. Gotta love that .67? O/D! Go for it!

Here's what the dual (BOP / Chev) bolt pattern 200-4R looks like. You can tell by the shiny pattern on the mating surface that this tranny was attached to a Chevy engine.
