Np205 rebuild to come

It was about the idler shaft moving up and down 1/4" and dumping oil on the driveway. Today I pulled the x-case and this is what I found (below). I got everything apart, but when it came to pulling the idler shaft it is seized to the idler gear and wont come out. I think the piece of metal in the pic is part of the bearing cage and the remnants must me binding everything. The idler shaft wallowed out the hole in the case. I am picking up a pulled transfer case off Craigslist for $50. I now need to order a rebuild kit. Any problems with the ones off ebay or amazon?

Im in the same boat, have to rebuild the 205 soon and have been looking at kits. The only thing Im wondering about is the listing of some kits, some list a 6210N input bearing and others list a 6307N input. The Timken set doesnt list either and if I remember correctly they came with both bearings.

Anyone know the difference in the input bearing? Auto vs. Manual? Early vs. Late?

Edit: Looked at the ebay kits (which are pictured with SKF bearings) http://www.ebay.com/itm/NP205-205C-2...3D370456918592

and it states the 6307 is for TH350 and early 10 spline SM465 and the 6210 is for late SM465 and TH400 with 32 spline input.

32 spline inputs for the TH400 and late SM465 use a large bearing.
The large and small bearing cases are different as well, and late cases have a round bolt pattern on the input side.

Off topic question but can you swap out the sm465 input shaft with a th400 input due to using the same bearing? Could you then use a 4l80 coupled to the np205?

I went through Quad 4x4 when I needed parts for mine. Got all of the parts for the nv4500 there as well. I did see some kits on eBay for both but I'm always skeptical that they may come with some no name chinese bearings that will crap out way too soon or do even more damage when they do fail.

Holy crap $475 for the kit??!!

Are SKF bearings that bad these days? The ebay kit shows thats what is in their kit and even if you buy an extra gasket kit and the small parts kit you will still be at $150.

Anyone used the ebay stuff?

450 from Quad? Wow thats a lot! I used them mainly for syncs, bearings and seals for the 4500. I only got a few seals for the 205 from them at the same time. I do remember having sticker shock for the 4500 parts though. I don't have a lot of experience with SKF so I can't really comment on their quality. I do see their bearings out there a lot though.

Depends on the year of the 465. The early 10 splines....NO.... the later model 32 spline yes, but the later model 32 spline inputs were round pattern, not figure 8. The early figure 8 patterns were 10 spline and used the 307 bearing

Correct and I'll add that the early 465 case and the th350 case can be machined to accept the big th400/late 465 bearing.

OK, so I picked up a used transfer case off craigslist out of a 77 3/4 ton truck. I know that there was a change right around the 77–78 year. The transfer case input shaft of my old 1978, uses the four bolt flange with a 30 spline. The used transfer case has to he yoke with the 10 spline. What do I need to do to make the old 30 spline flat flange work with this transfer case? Talking about where the CV joint hooks up. The picture is the craigslist transfer case with both old and new adapters. Do I have to swap out the whole gear assembly on that side with my old one, or is there an aftermarket flat flange that will mount to the CV joint but has 10 spline like this older unit?

You should be able to swap the shaft or shaft & gear assembly from one t-case to the other. I did the same swap but in reverse of what you want to do. I like the 4 bolt flange set-up better.

So never having done this, do I just start removing these large snap rings and pull the gears off one by one till I have a bare shaft and then do the same on the old one? This is the picture of my old one that I want to put in the used case so I can keep my 4 bolt flange. Thanks for any advice.

You should be able to swap that whole assembly, that's how I did mine.
You also should be able to break it down to the bare shaft and swap just the shaft.
Either way it should work !

Thank you so much for the help, I went ahead and switched over the shafts just to keep the gears together and original to that individual case. Plus the roller bearings inside of the gear seemed a little sloppy on my old one. Last question, does anyone know if this cut out for the retaining pin is for this washer is supposed to be left open and not covered by the snap ring? Or does it matter? Just wondering if it's a drain point for the roller bearings or not. Looks like there's one other spot no the end of the gear for that purpose. I'm just curious if it should be covered or not.
