NP261 work with a SM465

I was able to pick up a free NP261 transfer case today. Will I be able to use this with my SM465? I want to keep that transmission, so if anything goes it will be the t-case

I'd say check Advance Adapters and Novak and see if they offer an adapter kit to mate the two cases.

Re: NP261 work with a SM465

You have a "divorced" transmission and a "married" t case. Meaning the trans is made for a driveshaft to bolt to the back of it, but the t case is made to bolt directly to the output of the trans, it does not have yoke like a driveshaft on the input. As was mentioned, Advance Adapters or Novak might be able to provide an adapter, but unless you got this for free I'm not sure it's going to be worth the trouble. You might be better off trying to find a 4wd transmission first, then go from there.

I assume this is the difference between a 4wd sm465 and a 2wd sm 465. It does so happen I got this transfer case for free (right time right place) so I wanted to see if I could make it work before I decided to sell or scrap it

Yes that is the difference. I was just browsing Novak's site after you posted this and I did not see an adapter for that particular case but the one's they had that made a 2wd 465 into a 4wd for a different t case were around $500, hence my suggestion to look for a different trans.
