Will this work? Fixing SK Ratchet.

Sorry no pics.....

I completely disassembled an SK ratchet I came across. It was seized. After an Evaporust soak, rinse, and blow dry period, I tore it completely down.

No broken teeth but the chrome plating on the "paws" or whatever it is called (the gear which allows one direction or the other to be used) has a badly flaking chrome plating. It falls off if I touch it at all.

I want to use a wire wheel to remove the rest of the lose plating, clean the parts as best I can, lube with synthetic grease, and reassemble.

Do you think this will work? It will be a garage only tool.

There is a "rebuild kit" but it's $23.00. Is the kit worth it?

I think it will work fine. The plating shouldn't make a difference.

Re: Will this work? Fixing SK Ratchet.

Why would they have any plating on a torque bearing surface? Is it for friction reduction?

You may scoff at Snap On prices but with their new ratchets I can't say enough good about them. I've used one of my 3/8" ratchets to break lug nuts loose at salvage yard, with a cheater pipe and me standing on it

Re: Will this work? Fixing SK Ratchet.

That's neat and thanks for the suggestion (and link) but I am not the original buyer....

I know people used to find Craftsman tools at yardsales and then trade those in for new ones but I never looked at that as honest.

I'll just lube it up well, as long as the de-chromed part doesn't rust, I should be OK.

I might contact SK and see if they will sell me just a new detent spring and that paws part.

OK, emailed their company and asked if I could purchase just those parts.

it doesn't say you have to be the original purchaser...I'd call the number and talk to em...I'm sure they'll stand behind their tools reguardless of circumstances. ..

Re: Will this work? Fixing SK Ratchet.

I sent them an email, if they want to offer an exchange I will be game, but I was upfront I was not the original buyer.

Really I just want to repair this one in a way to prevent future rust.
