CounterPart Turn Signal Switch Modification

I replaced the turn signal switch in a '71 C10 / C20 with tilt column using a CounterPart brand. Once completed, I connected the battery and the horn began blaring. So, I took it back apart and found that directly under, and backside of the area the contains the slip ring plunger is a small steel cover. This cover is round on the aftermarket piece, but rectangular on the OE part. The problem is that the round portion protrudes enough it will contact the tilt knuckle and ground out the switch. The fix is to take your Dremel and grind away the protruding curved portion until it is straight.

Be aware, this switch has the red plastic Hazard stalk and will not accept the original threaded knob.

Another disappointing note... the reason I replaced the OE switch is it had quit canceling when turning left. So I figured, might as well (AKA MAW) replace the switch and cancel cam / slip ring with CounterPart copies. Well hell, now it cancels when turning left, but not when turning right? Yay!!!! I get to take it apart again to fix another aftermarket error.

There is some good news. I fixed my wobbly tilt mechanism by removing the (4) 1/4-28 screws and reinstalling with a dab of blue Loctite. Also cleaned and lubed upper bearings with some red SuperTech grease (Wal-Mart). I use this grease as it does not thicken much in freezing temps. I experimented with several different greases including Lubriplate white lithium by placing in the freezer overnight and then feeling the thickness. Simple, but effective.

Hopefully this tech tip will prevent others from having to do the job twice.
