Water pumps and pulleys???

So I'm getting my engine together and it's balancer, pulley and water pump time. I have a original truck 327 here as well still assembled so I am using it as a guide. So I put my balancer on to the exact same spot as my original and the bottom pulleys center the belt in the same spot on both engines. Now I bolt on my water pump and pulley, same pulleys from the truck (was disassembled when I got it). I measured the water pump at 5 5/8" from base to pulley mount. Not sure why but they are out 1/4" almost. Has anyone pressed the pulley mount plate back on the shaft of the pump? The pulley will get closer to the body that way.

Re: Water pumps and pulleys???

Having a hard time following. It looks like the water pump pulley needs to come out, not be pressed in. I'd probably just be looking to get a shim assuming everything else is installed and set right.

Pulleys are hard to get pictures of. No the pulley on the pump definately needs to go back. The last groove on the crank pulley only goes to the power steering g. First 3 need to line up which they don't.

If you have the room I would press it on further, if it doesn't hit anything it won't hurt anything. I would definitely use a prescribed length of stop so it only goes/press's on to what you want/need.

Re: Water pumps and pulleys???

It must be the pump that's out cause my power steering belt is dead on with the outside pulley. I'll have to press that base back a bit. Can't see what else it would be.

Those pulleys don't match up. One has 4 grooves & the other has 5 yet they are the same width.

Re: Water pumps and pulleys???

Crank has 4 water pump has 3. They arent the same width the pictures show them that way. These are the pulleys that are correct for 67 gm 327 with a/c and smog.

Re: Water pumps and pulleys???

Pushing the water pump pulley base back 3/16" was the answer. It just clears And the pulleys line up now.

Re: Water pumps and pulleys???

So glad I found this thread! This is the exact same issue I am having: 327 pulleys w/ short water pump and water pump pulley is too far forward. I'm going to tap water pump mounting plate back 3/16" and see what I get!

Re: Water pumps and pulleys???

That's a pretty serious press fit. If it were mine to do, I'd pull the back cover off the pump and support the shaft, then press the flange in. Otherwise the shaft and impeller will move backwards as well.

chewchevy, how did you move it?

Yes take the back plate off and support it that way. It is a serious press fit. A buddy of mine owns a garage and we used his big hydrolic press. It wouldn't move with my home press

Re: Water pumps and pulleys???

Some of those fans can pull a lot of air, especially on those bigger trucks. That and thermal cycling over the life of the pump, the manufacturer wants to make sure that they don't get the blame.
