Water for coolant during break in?

I've got my engine on the stand pretty much ready for break in. I was just going to use water for coolant as I will be draining it right after and that way if I have a leak it's just water. I am going to use a pusher fan on the other side of the rad as well.

That run in stand is a work of art Sir...

Making use of the factory radiator support is a great idea...I would add some cleats across the front and rear of each of the wheels of the stand where it sits on those 6x6 ....

So very well done...congrats!!!

Water for the run in will be fine....

That is the plan to make sure it doesn't roll. I had to mount it on the blocks to get my engine lift legs under it. If I ever do this again I will mount larger rubber wheels so the legs can get under it properly.

Looks good, but just don't give yourself carbon monoxide poisoning. It sneaks up on you quicker than you may think. Trust me I know. (Young and dumb..."It's a huge garage,. It'll only take a few minutes,. Nothing will happen, besides I got the door open."...Yeah right.) Good thing there was a detector in there because by the time it went off I was already gettin' confused and woozy. I'm sure you've already planned for that, but all the same... that stuffs no joke.

I would add some of this stuff to it:

https://www.hyperlube.com/product/super-coolant/

Or something that will leave a residue to prevent rust starting in the passages. They make stuff for that.

Yeah I was thinking some rust inhibitor too. Another question guys. If I run this with a brand new battery will I get a full break in before the battery dies? It's a larger battery I bought for my 2500hd. I wasn't going to wire up a alternator. It's just there for the belt to turn the water pump.

Re: Water for coolant during break in?

It should last, ignition does not draw much power. I did a direct hookup to my switched unfused circuit in my dash with an HEI and my distributor guy says add a 5-7 amp fuse.

Why risk it on a flat tappet break in? Or is it a Hydraulic Roller? Fail safe would be to add an alternator.

20 minutes minimum on a flat tappet break in? Or just wait till it is in the truck. It is not what we do, it is how we do it, when, why, where and of course again how.

Think and Think again is one of my motto's when I get to the point where you are.

Looking at the picture again, UH Yeah, run the alternator!

If the battery worries you, use a battery charger to keep the battery up during the run. The charger will also help make good the power used for starting.

Your battery should have a reserve capacity rating, minutes at 25amp draw.

Roller cam. Just wanting to break the rings in mostly but it won't hurt to break it in the same As a flat tappet.

Re: Water for coolant during break in?

Job well done!!!
Water is the very best coolant!!! Of course it cannot be used long term in an engine. I wouldn't ass anything to it to break it in. The awesome classic Chevy V8 has 1/4" pipw plugs on each sie of the block, allowing ALL the water to be drained after your testing. I'd leave the water in the block till the next day to make sure everything cooled down nicely!!!

When Smokey Yunick was involved with Nascar, (He quit Nascar in 1970) he ran straight water with a water soluable oil IN the water, to lubricate the water pump seal.

I prefer to have the gauges on the water pump end of the engine, to stay away form the flywheel area AND the exhaust....

IF, you have a good battery, the charger should not be needed
