Volt meter, check voltage not running and then running.
More than 14 volts running is usually standard. 12.6 to 13 not running is fully charged, i believe, there are charts for this Clip on ammeter works too, kind of specialized equipment though, i have a very old plastic ammeter that you place close to the charging wire and it moves with direction of current travel. |

Minimum charging voltage is 13.5V, but can be as high as 14.5V when running. Above that, you risk getting the battery too hot. 12.6 is a fully charged battery. Here's a link to Battery University- https://batteryuniversity.com/ Probably more than you ever wanted to know about batteries.
