Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

Posted this on my build page. Thought it was important enough to report here. "Just got a bit of a shock. Take a look at my brand new fuel filter. Look close and you'll see the filter cartridge has completely detached from the metal base and is floating about doing absolutley nothing but possibly impeding fuel flow to carb. Second pic is what its suppose to look like filter glued to metal base. Chinese junk!! And worst supplied by Edelbrock with the brand new 1406!!! It happened as well on the previous filter next to the tank!!. Heads up on this crap and better check yours if you have a similar one. Will be replacing both with a good filter as soon as i can find one NOT MADE IN CHINA!!!"

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

I am always nervous with plastic filters on the pressure side of the system. IM not sure but looks like the failed unit is installed with direction of flow backwards? Just cant tell for sure if im looking at it correctly.. I second the oversea's made components are usually not good

Filter installed correctly. Cut it open and glue has failed completely.

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

In the past I have seen these filters cause trouble.

As nice as I can Type It.

These type filters in My Opinion are for Lawn Mowing equipment.

I suggest a steel line and steel filter with minimal amount of rubber fuel line as possibly.

Please dont take offense to this .

I am just stating my experience from others that have had bad experiences with this type of filter.

I agree these are POS- plural. So how many are running these and not checking them, That it came with a brand new Edelbrock carb is a killer!

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

The only Fram filters that I ever buy are the clear fuel filters. I don't know where they are made now but I have never had a failure with one. I like to see how my gas is flowing.

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

Got some responses from locals and net sellers. Guess this is a bigger issue than i thought. Local store is pulling them. Imagine the engine damage and or what could happen when in a critical application? Hard to spot unless you look and maybe why many disregard as "filter" always looks "clean". On the one i cut open it.
The glue falls apart and doesn't appear to have been ever completely sealed to metal when made. More "covid" Cr-p????

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

GM made a filter for throttle body cars that had a nipple on the inlet and outlet side. It is all metal and due to being an EFI filter, has a 10 micron filter. It is AC Delco GF482 part number. There is also a WIX number 33482 I have used these on all my carb vehicles. Plastic is junk.

No s--t. These are one of the most popular filters around here and starting to think they are sneaking way more than 10% ethanol in the gas. Gonna be H to pay,

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

If that was a steel filter then you wouldn't know if the filter was floating around in there and there would be no worries. It's nice to see what is going on inside.

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

IMHO, these plastic filters have zero place in an under hood environment, especially in a pressure side environment.

My choice, but I wont use them.

I have seen these sorts of separation failures for a while now.

I have always used metal canister style filters under hood.

I change them every time I change the oil and oil filter.

Please stay safe everyone.

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

I use a Fram G3 on the suction side of the fuel pump just off the frame rail. Never seen one separate this way.

If it is a glue issue, wonder if the newer 15% ethanol gas is part of the problem? Around here, it is listed as 88 octane and a few cents cheaper then the 10% 87 version.

I think this may the case but being done without warning to literally "water down" fuel for profit. There must be several 1000 wineries in the CA foothills who grow grapes specifically for ethanol (and the huge tax write offs on their homes and vineyards). The gas even looks like everclear grain alcohol.

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

I had a bunch of the small paper filters that go in the inlet of the carbs do that also. That was before they ever got gas on them.

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

Auto parts place pulled all theirs off the shelf after i showed them mine. They also said edelbrock no longer supplies them with their new carbs. So much for product quality and problem announcements. Got an email from a guy in snow country saying that additives like stabil or heet may cause almost immediate failures.

Too true and maybe downright scary for most folks Maybe a simple no filter "sight glass" is needed? Again blowing thru the failed one had significant resistance and almost total blockage if the loose cartridge moved.

Good stuff here, thanks. Just a heads up don't know where the difference might be but the WIX is 13 microns and has a cellulose (paper) filter. Can't find info on the AC Delco P/N.

New filters are available on ebay...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/185901785020

Most likely from other suppliers etc.

Re: Failed Fuel Filter - Heads up

The issue remains with sealed metal cans that you cannot tell if filter media has detached inside and floating about. This ethanol thing seems to be out of control. The only ones i have seen that may work are the old fashioned glass screw togethers where the filter is held in place on both ends.

I have used these on tractors in the past.
They will loosen up over time and start leaking.

IMHO I would not use these on my vehicle.

I have been using the EFI version on numerous cars for years. I have never had an issue. Wix or AC Delco. They absolutely do not leak..

Maybe there is some cheap versions out there people are buying from Wal-Mart?

I agree not best choice. maybe a clear one supported at both ends using heat fused cartridges?? Posted elsewhere and more failures reported. Some may be failed for years without notice.
