1972 K10 Rear Axle Seats - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 72 K10. Rear axle does not sit square to the rest of the truck. Sits to driver side an inch or so. Also, rear axle seats are pointing downward. Do not believe this is the original axle, but not 100% sure. What should the length of the axle be ? Also, what are thoughts on cutting the axle seats and moving the axle over and fixing the seats so as not to stress the rear end?

If the axle isn't square to the truck there's a reason for it. You need to figure that out before you start fixing the problem.

Are the springs or the spring mounts tweaked or worn out? The spring bushings can be totally shot and all the springs shifted to one side. That would amount to about 1"......

All of that appears to be fine. Have taken the springs out and added a leaf in rear to get the rear up to a 6" lift like the front was when we got it. Nothing noticed during that.

Can see the GM 57 on the rear diff. It is a 12 bolt. What does the GM 57 mean?
