Post ok, to determine ratio the cheap way, i need details

ok with open carrier how to determine ratio the cheater way, by jacking a wheel and turning tire, i suppose if was 2,73 ratio then driveshaft turns 2.73 times to one rev of a tire ? or ? jst making sure, i need to find out whats in the 82 T/A, is supposed to be 2.73 from factory, just want to confirm its that or not. may swap the 3.73 rear out of the firebird to under it if needed..
hmm....

thanks

i blocked one tire and put car in neutral and spun tire one revolution exactly and the driveshaft spun 1 turn and then about 2/3 or 3/4 turn, this trick never works for me, im telling you its not fool proof. that says its anywhere form 3.23 to 3.73, thats impossible unless someone has been in the axle, these cars had 2.73, 2.93, 3.08, 3.23, 3.27, 3.42 and 3.73 ratios avaialable, so this is no fun.,

I think you have to spin both rear tires equally.

do it this way: make a mark on the tire thats off the ground (leave the other side down if it's a peg leg). Turn the driveshaft until the mark on the tire makes one complete revolution. Count the # of times the driveshaft has turned while the tire turned exactly one revolution. If the shaft turned 3 1/4 times, then you have a 3.23:1 ratio. A little over 4 turns, 4.10 etc... Easier to do with two people.

You did everything close to correct. Jack one side of rear end up, tranny in neutral. Turn free tire 2 complete revolutions. If drive shaft turns less than 3 full turns, it is 3.0:1 (2.73, etc.) or less. Barely more than 3 turns = 3.07. Close to but not a full 4 turns = 3.73 or 3.90. No, this isn't an exact science, but gets pretty close without opening the rearend up.

ok, here is the correct way to do this. do exactly what you did, jack up one wheel and turn it TWO full turns this will give you the correct ratio. or multiply the 1 and whatever that you got by two. the most accurate way is to turn the wheel 2 times.

sorry yellow didn't see yours, you are correct.
