six speed swap?

Looking for information on swapping a six speed manual transmission in a 1982 1 ton srw chevy 4x4. Truck has a 502 bb with a factory 4 speed and 205 transfer case. Has anyone done the zf 6 speed swap or maybe a 5 speed swap. Just trying to get the facts on doing it right. Might be talked into an automatic overdrive also but I really would rather stick to the stick. Thanks in advance.

Re: six speed swap?

A NV4500 5sp is a pretty easy swap almost a direct bolt-in.

91-to some year I forgot, the later ones are better but the early ones had a lower first gear.

Re: six speed swap?

Thanks for the thread. I think I can learn most of what I need from it. Any knowledge on the newer six speed?

NP

No info on the 6sp, only did research on the nv4500 because of the availability.

Re: six speed swap?

I wanted to originally go with a ZF 6-speed in my truck but it became a royal pain trying to get it all together - let alone find a good donor trans assembly... My recommendation is to do what I did - just stick with an NV4500 5-speed - easy to find & easy to swap!

how much modification would be needed to instal a nv-4500? I have an 86 gmc with the same exact setup he does. 4 speed with granny gear and a 205 transfer case.

From what ive read the 205 has gears that directly connect rather than the 208 which has a chain which connects the shafts
