Rear Hatch Repair

The PO repaired the rear hatch, but removed the internal metal supports for the hinges at the top. They replaced them with a piece of half inch steel that lasted for a while, but has now cracked the fiberglass on the inside of the hatch.

From what I can tell from looking at the gallery pics, is that there is a piece of sheet metal that is bent and riveted inside the rear hatch. The piece doesn't seem to be flush with the hatch, but inset a little bit.

Can any of you guys get some clear pictures for me, and also some dimensions so I can fab up the hinge support? Also, what gauge of steel did the general use for this piece? Have any of you modified this area to prevent it from breaking? It seems to be one of the problem areas of the rear hatch.
