Re: Need info...

Buddy that changed the engine said it was using oil. He swapped it out for a guy but he says he doubts anything is wrong with it besides PVC valve or something he said these motors are known for. The intake runners have some residue on them also so before I put it in was going to go through it. I would like to just clean it, cam it and drop it in...

Re: Need info...

90% of these will have some residue in the intake. Like MANY late model cars, a catch can is a decent idea if the oil bugs you, or of course if you go forced induction. My engine was about 60-70k old when I got it, uses NO oil, and even so I had to scrub a nice coating of grime of the intake path.

I just had my 6.0L rebuilt and I'm on a huge ZERO leaks ZERO fluid use kick. Can you elaborate on the catch can statement? First I've heard about it.

Re: Need info...

Well the guy I bought it from (friend of mine) said it was a work truck it came out of an said there was about a half a quart of oil in the intake. Ran fine when the guy drove to his shop and had great oil pressure just the oil in intake worries me... My buddy said something about the PCV valve is the culprit on these. Idk I'm LS dumb!!!

A handful of the cars I've messed with in the last few years have had some form of oil residue in the intake, both high mile and low mile cars. Early LS engines used up a little oil, and one of the first suggestions is installing a PCV catch can.
I've been told that the early Dodge 5.7/6.1s could use a little oil as well.

Aside from that example; pretty much every forced induction vehicle runs the risk of blowby simply from the pressure in the crankcase, again the first thing done is installing a catch can. (I've literally seen over a quart of oil pour out of intercooler piping.

Truthfully, its a "can't hurt" mod to pretty much any car. I can't substantiate whats causing it, but it isn't really un-common to find the residue in the intake. Like I said, my engine didn't use any fluids and was mechanically sound, and even so I found some residue in the intake. Take a look at some of the super-high end builds on yellow bullet. Many of the guys running things like vacuum pumps are also running catch cans in their vent system.

Re: Need info...

Pulled the plugs on the drivers side and the first plug was white, second plug was kinda gray, third looked normal, and forth looked kinda white... Motor seems to have great compression considering its hard to roll clear through compression stroke with a half inch ratchet.. Still debating on pulling heads!

Re: Need info...

Assuming your using a cable throttle since you are going to the run the 700r4...and you'll need the TV cable bracket for the application; you'll need a harness (you can have one made, and it really cleans things up vs the look of a modified harness). You'll need the ecm out of the same year-range truck as the engine was from.

Re: Need info...

Well I've done some searching and think I am going to put a small cam in it and swap springs, carb and 6ls kit and leave alone! Just gonna clean it up and paint the block... Found the intake, gaskets, and box for 590... Still would like advise on a cam for the 5.3 with 706 heads... Don't want to go huge but want a noticeable idle!
