79 Burbo Interior Questions

Hey all,

I have a 79 Suburban, 1/2 ton, 2wd, Silverado trim. Truck is dark blue with woodgrain.

Truck is missing the headliner and I have 2 questions...

1. Anyone have a source that sells complete headliners without rear AC?
All I can seem to find is kits with rear AC.

2. Trying to piece together what colors the interior would have been.
It currently has light tan velour seats, blue carpet, and light brown door panels.
That in mind, what color would the headliner have been?

Thanks,

D

Re: 79 Burbo Interior Questions

From experience nobody sells the headliners for burbans without rear a/c . If you have no backer board you will have to start from scratch . I was able to redo my old liner ibacker it's not all that hard. The hardest part was getting the rear panel back in . Front was easy

Thank you. Going to be a fun project. Truck has a Vortec 8100 (496) and an Allison trans from an 02 Silverado HD pick up.

Going to freshen up the interior and probably bag it. Should be great for pulling my trailers.

Thanks for the info. That is kind of what I was expecting.

I'm probably going to have a local interior shop make me some buttery soft leather seat covers like my favorite broken in recliner, lol. I'll probably just get the headliner materials from him.

Out of curiosity, what color is the rest of the interior? I like the creamy color you used for the headliner.

Re: 79 Burbo Interior Questions

My dad bought a new 79 suburban with the camel interior and I believe the headliner was oyster. My 79 crew cab has blue interior with an oyster headliner so I don't know if it's coincidence or if they were all that off white color?

You can get the material from Miami Corp. This matched the color and pattern of my original headliner.

I've been seeing a lot with that oyster color headliner - you might be right that maybe a lot were that color. My GM dealer album doesn't have much for headliner info.

Thanks for sharing that link too. I'll take a look.

Re: 79 Burbo Interior Questions

Don’t want to derail your interior thread here but that’s a rad Burb! You wouldn’t happen to have a Build thread on that would ya? I’ve long thought the 8.1 would make a fine replacement for my tired ol 454 in my ‘75 Burb.

However, on the subject of headliners… mine came with this really classy headliner feature… some faux woodgrain paneling wedged in the trim to keep the liner from sagging lol

Thanks, that's good info. Do you just use spray adhesive to adhere that to the backing?

ShortHaul, it kind of looks like you have an oyster headliner with a tan interior. We had three of those trucks in succession in my family and I kind of think I remember them all having the whitish headliner.

Thanks for sharing this picture. Definitely looks like the creamy color others mentioned.

The 8.1L is a monster for sure, but do your homework if you haven't already. Not many go-fast parts and it really doesn't share much with other motors. Stock I think it's 335-345 HP and around 450lbft. Nelson Performance is one of the few "tuners" and Raylar Engineering sells a ported intake, throttle body, tunes that get you closer to 380hp and 550lbft. Great for a moose like a burban. Can really feel that low end torque. Gonna start working on it more soon, I'll think about a thread. I usually forget to post stuff, lol..

The headliner material has about a 1/4" foam backer so I had to scrape all that off the old backer and then spray adhesive on backer and headliner and stuck it together. I used a small roller to over the whole thing to make sure it was adhered everywhere.

I don't know about the suburban headliners but my backer is sort of like fiberglass insulation pressed into shape and had a thin coating of something on the side you glue the headliner to. It was somewhat fragile.
