Dealership Shut Downs

Anybody catch the news about all the dealerships being shut down nationwide due to a computer hack? Quite the deal. Welcome to "the cloud"

Re: Dealership Shut Downs

Friend is a service manager for a Chevy dealership . Healey owns a multitude of dealerships and he’s been dealing with it for two days . My son works at an Acura dealership and has had no problems since they don’t use CDK . It’s scary what info is on dealerships computers . Income address social security numbers driver license numbers of their clients .

Re: Dealership Shut Downs

Kinda makes me wonder the amount of info they retain. Can this move on to the vehicles themselves where a hacker can shut down the car itself?

My Son works back parts counter at our local Ford Dealership and they’ve had problems the last 2 days. He was sent home earlier yesterday because they couldn’t do anything computer wise

Re: Dealership Shut Downs

Just one more threat to personal privacy. I feel like selling my econobox after running it through the car wash on Wednesday, and losing the "shark fin" cover off the antenna. $120 at the dealer, unless one can find just the cover (which I ordered elsewhere). Radio (I only use it for my iPod, anyway) still works. When is the last time an automated car wash ripped an antenna off one of our trucks? I'm expecting the thing to start nickel-and-diming on me now, but once it's out of warranty, there isn't much that's less than $1k to get repaired. I got it not dear, and it's been good so far. 2 years left on the extended warranty. 28k miles in 8 years. I could just drive the truck if I sell the econobox. Between the two, it's about 2k miles a year.

Yup. My "first car" was a '37 La Salle that I worked on and ended up selling before it could even be driven, due to engine issues. I didn't even "own" it, since I was only 15, and my dad had bought it. That was a dog's age ago. It's amazing how the antique vehicles now are holding their own, in terms of value and utility.

Absolutely! I'll be hanging on to my carb'd toyota and my TBI Suburban. Thinking about selling my longhorn and flatbed. Too many vehicles to maintain, insure and register. Suburban is my newest vehicle being a '91

Re: Dealership Shut Downs

This was a topic on a different tech related forum. Lots of discussion about lack of "Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity" plans. Seems most of these dealerships had NO plan for what to do when CDK had a problem. Or even a closer to home ISP failure due to squirrel action.

Remember - 'The Cloud' is just someone else's server ran by someone else's employees.

Heh, I tell people the same thing! I put nothing in the "Cloud".

Re: Dealership Shut Downs

CDK is supposed to be the cheapest and crappiest company. They use this at my job if it's down much longer I'm sure most dealerships will switch to a different company.
