longbed to medium bed??

Anyone seen or heard of someone cutting a longbed down to say a 7 foot bed instead of 6'6". I was thinking of cutting say 8 inches out of the front and 3 or 4 inches out of the back instead of the usual 12 and 8. Would love to see a picture before I do it!

Re: longbed to medium bed??

I'VE NEVER DONE IT. MOST PEOPLE JUST SHORTEN THE FRAME & PUT A SHORTBED ON IT, BUT I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL BOXES SHORTENED, SO IF YOU HAVE THE BODYWORK SKILLS I DONT SEE ANY REASON WHY YOU COULDN'T. I LIKE TO MAKE LITTLE SUBTAL (MY SPELLING IS ATROSHOUS) CHANGES THAT ONLY OTHER TRUCK NUTS CAN NOTICE. GOOD LUCK WITH IT JOHN

IMO, if you are willing to go to all the work of shortening the box, frame, driveshaft, lines, etc, you have every right to run whatever length you like.

Re: longbed to medium bed??

I thought I had seen on here a while back where someone had shortened a longbed less than the normal 20 inches. My reason for wanting to do this is, I have a 4x4 with a 3 inch lift and it looks a little too long as a longbed and I think the proportions don't look quite right, but I think lifted shortbeds look to short. The truck is super clean right now but it got smacked in the rear of the bed right at both taillights so I could chop off the back end and weld a new back end on and make it a bit shorter and while I am at it take 6 or 8 inches out of the front of the bed and frame. I have read up on a few of the builds on here where guys cut longbeds down to shortbeds. From what rockcrln said in his build it takes a little massageing to get the body lines to line up on the rear portion but it seems like if you took out 3 or 4 inches instead of 8 it would be easier to make it all line up. Just wondering if anyone had seen this before? The main drawback I see is no camper shell or bed cover would fit it.........

Why don't you go ahead and do it so we can see what it looks like? Some of the "off the wall" type mods end up looking great... I would like to chop a lowered truck 1 or 2 inches, just enough so people say "there is something different about that truck but I just can't figure out what"...

Re: longbed to medium bed??

I agree with your take on length. I think the short blocks look a little to short and the long a little too long. For me, the perfect length is in between. (Visually) Just my own opinion.

All you need is a decent picture and I can photoshop it for you.

Re: longbed to medium bed??

i willl post up a picture in the next couple days and it would be awesome if you could chop it for me. I guess you could do it to scale so if you know the bed was 8 ft you can remove a certain number of inches? I know nothing of photoshop.

Re: longbed to medium bed??

I was one of the people talking about doing it.

Two things held me up. One is I'm scared of putting in all the work and it looking stupid (I'm a chicken, lol). Number two is I'm completely broke right now so the project has been side-lined for the time being.

As soon as I address the money situation I still might suck it up and just do it but still not 100% sure.

I was planning on taking 8" out of the front and 6" out of the back instead of the typical 12" and 8".
