np205 Transfer Case Differance?

Was able to remove the sm465/np205 setup (wow, that thing is a chunk of iron!) from my truck today and looking over the TH350/np205 setup going in I noticed a differance. The 4spd speedo cable hooked in to the left side of the transfer case via a box like adapter. The np205 going in has the speedo connection on the right side of the case. Is this a problem or did the General change something from driver's side to passenger's side during production of the 205's ? If just needing a longer cable to go across the transmission around to the right side of the transfer case I can order that. I don't have a lot of 4x4 knowledge but I know folks on this board do so hopefully someone can help on this. Thanks,

Re: np205 Transfer Case Differance?

im pretty sure you can get an auto speedo cable. however without buying anything, you can just unbolt those 8 bolts on the rear housing. lay the tcase on its face and pur some 2x4 wood blocks under it so its nice and flat. lift the rear housing straight up. there are needle bearings in it, they can fall out. if you go straight up theyll stay put. swap both with each other.

also put some grease on those needle bearings to keep em in place helps too.

Re: np205 Transfer Case Differance?

Thanks obijuan for the reply. The transfer and transmission are right now together in one assembly the way I purchased it. New overhau, gaskets and converter in one package. May need to seperate to change the rear housing as you mentioned. Any idea of when the change was made (years or models) from left side to right side of the transfer speedometer connection?

Re: np205 Transfer Case Differance?

There's so many variations of the GM 205, but there might still be a tag on the front face between the shift rails of the tcase. That has some info on that might help tell the years. I'm not even real sure, but most everything I deal with is 77+k30 stuff. All I have seen are pass side speedometers.
Ford and Dodge use driver speedometers on the 205. Those will swap straight over to GM cases no issue.

If you have any questions about the 205, off road design has a great amount of knowledge on them and they are good at emailing their customers back

Re: np205 Transfer Case Differance?

Thanks for the replies. I've got some learning to do going to a auto/205 set-up. My only experience has been with the sm465/205 and then not a lot. Been a very good unit to me but the clutch and my knees no longer seem to get along real well. Had my truck with the 4 spd. since '85 and just can't part with it so going to an auto trans. Getting old sucks but it beats the alternative.

Re: np205 Transfer Case Differance?

I had a similar problem with a 205. Can't remember why I had to swap it, but I took the tail housing off a Ford 205. Only difference was the speedo location. Maybe you got the 205 I sold all those years ago??
