LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

This could be the only picture posted but I am just wondering if any more are left out there. I just converted my three speed saginaw to a saginaw with R10 overdrive. I finished it this week and all I can say is wow. I was running 3000rpms at 65, now I can run 70 or 74 by GPS at 2100 RPMS. Talking about smooth and a gas saver. It took almost a year to get all the parts together and now it was worth every second. After rounding it all up I found a complete 67 with the OD so I got it as a spare. Here it is with shiny paint it doesn't have any leaks yet. I rebuilt the whole thing including rewinding both the slamming and holding coil on the solenoid. These Overdrive units are easy to rebuild, so if anyone ever needs one rebuilt let me know! It still works off the governor and only engages after I exceed 28 MPH and I also have a push button to turn it on and off electrically along with the mechanical cable lockout.

If anyone else has one please post pictures. I know mine came out of a 67 c10 with a inline 6. Yes I know I will have to be easy on it with a little over 450 hp but That hasn't been an issue yet. Highway speeds are so nice now. I see some long trips in my future when I get my AC in.

Nice addition to a already nice truck. What is the OD ratio?

Re: LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

Borg Warner states it's a 30% overdrive. I can actually split shift every gear if I wanted and run it like a six speed but that's to much trouble. 2nd overdrive is like going into 3rd normal. Thank yall for the complements. It's extremely dirty. I live on a gravel drive and it's been raining

Well I busted a loop with her today and filled up before takeoff and after I got back. With the hood off and running 70 to 80 I am averaging 17 mpg I am stoked. This was all highway driving

Re: LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

I have on that does not currently work and has a few leaks. I would love to be able to get it working, if I can find the time. If you would be so kind as to go more in depth on how to re wrap the solenoids as well as post the part numbers for the gaskets/seals that you used. These parts are not too easy to find.

Re: LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

The only odd seal used is in the solenoid housing for the rod and the exact same seal goes in the housing of the overdrive case where the rod goes through. Gaskets are not made for the overdrives any more but there is only one missing and I just used the right stuff gasket maker. They still make saginaw with overdrive rebuild kits that come with the correct bearings and o-rings for the od unit. When I get home I will get that part number. I am currently on a family trip. Now the wrapping of the solenoid took me 4 try's to get the amperage right. You have to use a coil winding wrapper counter and a ton of patience. But most could are not bad. It's the contacts inside. When I get home I will take more pictures of the tools needed and I can walk you through how to check it if you want

Re: LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

Let us know if it's for sell! Lol. If your tired of rowing gears I understand replacing it but I absolutely love mine and how nice it cruises in od down the highway. It blows people's minds when they ride with me and the old timers at the car shows are always trying to buy it. The cool factor is through the roof with them

Re: LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

I loomed around for a saginaw 3spd overdrive for a while but ended up just putting 3.08 gears in my 67 but I would still like to have one of the od 3spds it would only work now for me in highway travel wonder if ai could even use 3rd gear with od and a 3.08 ?

Re: LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

Negative. I am running 373 and in OD with a 450hp Stroker I am only running 2000 or so rpms at 70. Anything below 55 and it starts to lug. It converts my 373 to a 261 by my math. It would convert your 308 to a 214 final gear and you would need to be running a 120 to get any rpms out of it. I can run 105 at around 3000rpms. You would have to go back up in rear gears no doubt

Re: LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

Well I say you can't 1967. But I couldn't stand it and I plugged in some numbers and it says at 70 in OD you would be pulling 1700 rpms. Are you running a inline 6 or v8. If it's a six I am going to say it's not a good idea without a gear change. If v8 go for it. How many rpms are you pulling at 70 now my math shows around 2500 rpms

Re: LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

How about a factory overdrive. I bought this 69 CST with a 3OOT and factory overdrive a few years ago, Thought the 3OOT would be cool but after a few weeks of driving it daily and fighting with the column shift when it got jammed in second gear I sold it. Kinda regret it now, but oh well we all have "the one I should have kept stories". You can see the Overdrive push/pull lever just under the dash, its a small rectangular shape, just under the blank hole in the gauge cluster.

Awesome truck. Looks optioned well also. Was it a six or v8? I have only ever see these OD behind the I6 from factory and the two I have both came from behind I6

And that's prob a truck you should of kept for sure. gm states they stopped putting OD in anything after 68. That's clearly a 69 and looks rare.

Re: LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

It was a 307 and still had the breaker points in it. Only had 61,000 miles on it and the 307 ran so smooth you could put a glass of water on the Air Cleaner while the engine was running and the water wouldn't ripple. It was rust free too and just needed bed wood. I had the build sheet for it and think it was built in October 68 so probably one of the last trucks to be built with factory O/Drive.

What would it take to add OD to my current tranny? I could use a little more top end without getting the RPM's so high.

250/3OTT

Thanks.

Re: LETS SEE THEM 3OTT trucks with OVERDRIVE

It would require a complete functional saginaw with Borg Warner r10 overdrive which is like finding hens teeth. I lucked upon an extra one I am keeping as a spare and for parts. The OD is sweet when cruising distance. Everything gets quiet and you just know the motors not going to explode lol
