Volt meter, check voltage not running and then running.
More than 14 volts running is usually standard. 12.6 to 13 not running is fully charged, i believe, there are charts for this

Clip on ammeter works too, kind of specialized equipment though, i have a very old plastic ammeter that you place close to the charging wire and it moves with direction of current travel.

Minimum charging voltage is 13.5V, but can be as high as 14.5V when running. Above that, you risk getting the battery too hot. 12.6 is a fully charged battery. Here's a link to Battery University- https://batteryuniversity.com/ Probably more than you ever wanted to know about batteries.
