Re: Tuner blews up lsx engine on dyno

Its nothing out of the ordinary. When playing with high horsepower stuff there is always the risk of the motor going boom. It sucks but its just part of the game.

Those pistons have been hit with Boost & Nitrous, Stock hypereutectic pistons don't hold up forever in those conditions. Forged pistons don't explode like that

Re: Tuner blews up lsx engine on dyno

If I remember correctly that car had a lot of passes and miles on it running a lot of nitrous and boost. Amazing for a stock short block really.

Re: Tuner blews up lsx engine on dyno

Keep in mind thats a stock engine, slapped with a bunch of extra atmosphere...and look at how much power its making up to that point!

Forged pistons don't shatter the same way....but they can still make a hell of an underhood WHAMMO!

When you play the "how much can we milk this motor game", its just playing the #'s more or less. You know what the theoretical limits are on a stock motor, and you know that its going to blow up eventually, so you just give it the best tune you can and give her hell.

Its not nearly as bad as watching a high-dollar pro built engine (making the same horsepower in some cases ahahaha), melt down on the dyno. Cooking a $1500 5.3 aint' as bad as cooking a $8500 shop built engine.

Re: Tuner blews up lsx engine on dyno

IMHO they meant to blow it up from the beginning.
If you listen before they start the talk about blowing it up.
They also talk about how much abuse it has already taken.
They had a lot of spectators if it was just there for a tune.
They also talk about the owner having another engine for it when they are pushing it to the lift.

im still amazed at how much power a turbocharged stock 5.3 makes...just think how much longer it would have lasted without all the abuse...imo its still a tough engine

If you ring gap an lq4, you'd be amazed at how far you can push them.

Gapping the rings will only help if they are going to butt together.

High cylinder pressure and detonation will still kill stock pistons and rods....

Re: Tuner blews up lsx engine on dyno

Did they ever mention how much boost they were pushing? I didn't hear any talk of boost numbers...

Re: Tuner blews up lsx engine on dyno

Boost numbers don't really mean much.

20 psi from an ebay GT45 is worlds apart from 20 psi out of a PT106.

Re: Tuner blews up lsx engine on dyno

This is an interesting article on a boosted LS.
They make an insane amount of HP on what turns out to be a stock 4.8.

Re: Tuner blews up lsx engine on dyno

That was pretty exciting, when I blew up my supercharged mustang years ago it was definitely anti-climatic. It broke a piston that had to tight of a gap on the ring.

I like videos of other peoples stuff going poof!! It sucks when its mine.
