Truck or car??
Does anyone know a way to identify a 12 bolt truck differential from a 12 bolt car differential? It does not have the ring gear on it and it is a posi. I tried to run the numbers on it and didn't get anywhere. Any help would be appreciated as I am hoping to put it in my 71 K5 soon.
Thanks

Re: Truck or car??
I can't find a pic of one or the other ATM, but I know I saw one last night. Anyway the truck 12 bolt cover has a definite bulge where the ring gear is and is not round per say. The passenger 12 bolt cover is pretty much round and it has a ^ shape rib on it. HTH

Re: Truck or car??
Is there a way to tell with just the differential out of the housing? Maybe they are the same... I am having a hell of a time finding a difference. I am going to try and remember to take some pictures of it tonight to see if it helps anyone.
Capt Fab, hows the weather up that way these days? I sure enjoy that part of the country.

Re: Truck or car??
As far as ID'ng the carrier's themselves, I'm not sure what to say there, and no they aren't the same. The series' are split differently. Maybe someone will have some ideas on that. Maybe if you can post a pic or two. Also take a measurement with it stood up on a flat surface, and measure up to the flange that the ring gear bolts to.
The weather's been really mild this winter. But as it often does, it is dragging on with the cool weather and rain. Quote:

Re: Truck or car??
Thats a good idea. I should have done that to begin with I suppose. I won't be able to post until tonight though, I've got to go pick up a swb 2wd frame that I bought this afternoon.
I'll try and get a good representation of the distance to the ring gear mounting surface and of any numbers on it too. Thanks

Re: Truck or car??
Here are some pictures I took this morning. The only numbers I could find on it were "673" on carrier itself and the GM numbers on the ring gear "13^39 GM PZ 027"
Does that help anyone?

Re: Truck or car??
The gear ratio is 3.0 even which is odd. That is a posi. I dont know of any truck with a 3.0 gear ratio only a 3.07. A quick google search brough this up http://www.realoldspower.com/phpBB2/...14450ea7d1d063 . apparently you have a car carrier

Re: Truck or car??
I agree with the ratio being strange, I may have "remembered" it wrong. I will check it again tonight. It does look like from the link you posted that it is a car carrier rather than a truck carrier though. Bummer

Re: Truck or car??
I guess the ol memory isn't what it used to be.... Where was I? Oh yeah, the ratio numbers are 14^39 which would make it a 2.78 I believe. That looks better.
Thanks for the help
