CST/10 info

I got my hands on a 1969 Chevy CST/10. My neighbor mentioned a few times that it was the rare version of the C10. He knows his stuff, hes restoring a 68 Cougar, and owns a 82(?) Chevy Silverado. So now that I own it, I went online to find some stuff on the CST/10. I cant find crap about it, except for sale ads.The only info I got, was that only 2000 were made in '70. Woohoo, it does turn out to be rare, and I know it was only made in '69 and '70.

Im just wondering whats special on the CST/10 verses a normal C10, the production numbers for '69.

And also, what can go in place of the stock turbo 350 trans. Preferably something from a newer truck. My dad and I are looking for another turbo 350 (this truch is engine and trans-less), but wonder what else fits with no changes to the crossmember.

Re: CST/10 info

CST was avalible from 67 - 70, and on the blazers untill 72. It was actually run on the trucks until 72 also, but under a different name plate. (same option code) They might have had that package in the 60 - 66 run, but I don't know that gen of truck.
That "only 2000 made" may be bogus... everyone wants there stuff to be rare, so they make stuff up on it. GM never kept track of the actual numbers, but they do have percentages. I'll have to see if I can dig that up when I get home.
The CST was mostly bright trim, carpet, badges, and mouldings... again, I can see if I can get that stuff listed this evening, I know I have that info.
As for the tranny, you want a newer one as in, overdrive? Or you just want to get a junk yard tranny and newer is more likely to be in working condition? By simply unbolting and relocating the cross member, you can install any GM automatic tranny.... new holes may have to be drilled, but that's minor.

Re: CST/10 info

Thanks for that tranny info, now I can tell my dad to throw in his 700R4. I know I can throw about anything in.
Yeh, I couldnt find any good info on it, and thats just what I found. When I searched, alls I got was for-sale ads and crap. Then I found this place too, so its all good.

Re: CST/10 info

I gotta agree with Longhorn Man on this one. My 68 is a CST and I've seen a bunch out on the road so I don't think that 2,000 figure is correct.

Re: CST/10 info

There's a couple of other boards members from around Cypress so keep your eyes open.

There seems to be a ton of c10's over in the Kingwood/Humble/Porter area and besides my CST, I've seen at least two other CSTs on the road in the past year.

Re: CST/10 info

Awesome, I will once I get driving. But I cant wait to get this one on the road, I finaly get something thats killer, and to be way proud of.

Unless they stay off 290, I havent seen many. The ocasional rust laidened farmer's truck, but not many restored ones.

I just read in a book I got for Christmas that in 1967 12,588 CST's were produced. Not sure on other years, I will have to keep reading.

Re: CST/10 info

I just put a 700R4 in my 72 and there's a bit more involved than just relocating the tranny crossmember. It still is an easy swap and sure makes the truck more enjoyable. I love taunting the owners of newer trucks that mine is getting better gas mileage than theirs.

Re: CST/10 info

My dad knows of what else it needs, the only reason originaly was that crossmember. He was going to mate it up to a built 400hp TPI small block for his 78 ElCamino. Its a long story, but it was totaled while parked. But he still has that engine, and the 700R4. Wont let me use the TPI, but his friend is giving us a EFI 350 from a 96(?) Tahoe.

Re: CST/10 info

Vince, I was just refering to the physical part of installing it in. The drive shaft will need worked on, a lock up controller installed, and the TV cable will need to be set properly... IMO, the Bowtie overdrives is the ONLY way to go.
in 69, 6% of the trucks had the CST package.
i can't seem to find the total production numbers of all the models at this moment... I'll keep looking though.

Re: CST/10 info

Thats the kind of info im looking for thanks. Ive been looking online most of the day (home sick) and cant find anything. I wonder if e-mailing Chevy to see if they still have the production numbers. Ill look through a few books my dad has to see if its in there.

Like I said, he had every thing ready to drop that 700R4 into his ElCamino, the thing is for this truck is he didnt want to bother with the crossmember (assuming at the time it was welded on) and then get a custom drive shaft. Now that the crossmember issue is solved, its onto custom drive shafts...

Thanks for all your help so far longhorn man.

Re: CST/10 info

568840 trucks were built in 69 that could recieve the CST package.
This includes all 1/2 ton SWB, LWB, Cab and chassis, blazers, burbs, but doesn't include the P chassis. Including 3/4 ton stuff, one ton stuff, 4X4's...etc.
So 6% of that, comes out to 34130.
There is no wya of knowing how many of what model... say how many one ton step sides had the CST. I would guess none. But it is only a guess. We all know, that the 2 most common bodys to get the CST, was the 1/2 ton short fleet, and the 1/2 ton long fleet. Knowing this, your 69 is a LWB fleet, it is the most common model made, they sold 268,233 of them.
So as far as rare stuff goes, it is safe to assume that the 69 LWB 1/2 ton is more likely to be a CST, than any other model of 69 truck... just becouse they made so many more of them. 69 C/20 fleet is the runner up to the most being made...and it was only 74,894.

Re: CST/10 info

Off in the 290 area. It will be awhile till mine is rolling under its own power. But if you see a big orange CST/10 being chain towed this weekend, thats mine.

So if I got this right, 268,233 of them made in 1969 are CST/10s like mine?

Thanks for all the info.

Re: CST/10 info

Welcome from another NW Houstonian. It's funny, but now that you've got that truck you'll start seeing 67-72 chevy trucks everywhere around. Hopefully, I'll get mine back on the road this year. It's in a semi-frame off rebuild after T-boning a 1994 Mazda truck that decided he could turn left on a red left turn only signal. No insurance from him, me only liability.

Re: CST/10 info

Yeh, what does that 6% number mean, the # of CST/10s? Or is 268,233 the # of CST/10s? Thats where Im lost.

If you see a orange CST10 being towed behind a truck tomarrow morning, its mine, . Gotta towbar to pull it instead of chain towing it, so atleast if it rains it wont kill all the plans.
