Where do the three AC cables go?

I am installing the cables to the stock AC controller on a 71 but I am not sure which one goes where. I have one cable attached outside the firewall to the plenum but not sure where it and the others attach to the controller with three arms...defrost...outside... Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
BTM

The cable outside the firewall to the plenum attaches to the bottom of the control head, The outlet selector cable attaches to the middle control arm and the defroster cable attaches on the top of the control arm. Here is a picture from the service manual. Hope this helps.

Unhappy Re: Where do the three AC cables go?

Well, I got them in/attached but it was a bit more difficult than I expected. I couldn't get the defrost cable to move freely and after working it a bit I ended up breaking the portion where the loop tip attaches. I had a spare controller and redid the whole thing and even used a spare cable but it's still too stiff/ not as smooth as the others. Anyone have ideas? They would be appreciated. I am not happy using the spare controller/it wasn't in as good of shape...I tried to save the best portions...do the best with what I had but man, it was just one of those days where you put in loads of effort and gain little.

Roger

Re: Where do the three AC cables go?

Are you using the correct cable for the defroster? The longest one, obviously, goes through the firewall to the temperature door, the shortest one goes to the duct selector box, and the middle-length one goes to the heater/defroster selector. From my own experience you can put these last two in the wrong place and they will work, but then the defroster is very stiff.

Yeah, thanks. I have a middle sized one on the defrost but it's still a bit stiff. I was thinking of oiling it a bit...I also checked to see if I have it coiled around correctly and it seem fine, a curve up and around... Thanks though! Roger

The longest one doesn’t go through the firewall. You would think it does since it’s the furthest point away but it actually goes to the defrost door that’s right under the controls. The middle length goes through the firewall

Source: comparing the OE cables that came on the truck. The one going through the firewall doesn’t have a fastener clip on the end that connects to the box on the outside firewall

Tip save and transfer over the end clips off of your old cables when using repro cables. As usual with repro stuff the clips that come with them don’t fit properly
