Towing Capacity?

Got a question for folks who pull travel trailers!

My '89 S-10 long bed has 1625 lb payload and the hitch is rated at 1750 lb max. Even small travel trailers are generally over 2000 pounds gross weight. Anybody know if the 1750 lb towing limit is absolute? For instance, is a 2000-2400 lb trailer with electric brakes too heavy?

If the S-10 is out of the running...

What's the towing capacity of a '76 C10 half ton? Mine had a 350 and a camper on it at one time. Campers are pretty heavy! It currently has a 305/T350 and no camper. I've pulled a car dolly with a 2400 lb car on it. Worked pretty well even with the performance radials. Not sure how long the trans and rear end will hold out though.
