You need one of these....

http://www.pickupspecialties.com/Ext...ad_support.htm

Amazon.com: Extend-A-Truck 944 Truck Bed... Amazon.com: Extend-A-Truck 944 Truck Bed...

I can't believe it would be hard to build one.

it's an elite club we are members of. I was building a ceiling in a 2 1/2 car garage and needed 23 sheets of plywood, 42 12' 2x4s, and 9 rolls of R19. It all fit in the neighbor's 02 Explorer Sport Trac (4' bed). Talk about a hairy ride for 3 miles.

guy had done sold his truck but it hadn't been picked up yet, he let us borrow it to get some free bricks from a house torn down, little red ones, we filled the entire bed. First time I ever done a wheelie in a truck, also just a short trip, had to be off the gas to make it turn......

It was a full size red dodge ram somethin, I just didn't want to make 2 trips so we fill it to the rim with bricks. I didn't realize at the time how much we put in there, only had 3 turns to make, first one it kept going straight....

Well ,, Redneck ,,I have done that too.. your load looks fine ,,the only way it's going to fall out is if you back up real fast and hit the brakes,,lol

Your photo made me think of mine that the wife took a picture of ,,I used to have a headache rack on my other truck ,,so I had to use a blanket to protect the cab and I was fine also.. only 5 miles on level ground getting it home,,no worries though..

What I did is take some 8p dulex and nail the ends of the long boards together and also just above the ties to keep the ropes from slipping up.. I felt good about it,,

Re: I was "that guy" today...

I was in Warsaw Indiana some years ago, on a farm where my brother worked. He had a truck load of hay that he was unloading. I told him I know a faster way. That's the first time I ever heard the term.

A little off topic but........Larry when you mentioned Idaho , one did come to me. My dad and his circle of friends call those blue tarps that you see all over the place " The Idaho state flag" .... Can't drive thru Idaho without seein a bunch of them.

Re: I was "that guy" today...

I have a bed extender similar to the one LockDoc linked, but mine is curved to give a little better angle of departure. I use it a fair amount for long lumber in my 72. It doesn't take up much room and gives a great place to secure your load. I don't care for half the board hanging out unsupported as it tends to weaken/break lumber. Can't really joke about the severe overload scenarios, they don't always come out good for those in your way...never understood why two trips wasn't possible, especially for the short distances everyone references.

Re: I was "that guy" today...

Great stories everyone (and feel free to keep them coming!)

I've had one of the most exhausting day's I've ever had. Two man post hole diggers are the Devil! 7 holes went great. Last hole got stuck on a tree root 2.5' down. WOULD NOT spin out... ended up digging it out.... yay... We took down a large tree a few years ago... I was afraid that was going to happen. My little 120lb wife kicked ass on the machine though!

So we got the holes dug, and I started my 16x24 deck framing. I get everything square with string, a square and tape measure, then leveled the boards, then leveled the 4x4's. After I do concrete tomorrow (or not, may not be able to walk) I'll remove the outside boards, run string levels, notch the 4x4's, rerun the outer joists, and all should be good. I was only off 1/16" across the front.

Plan on cutting the 4x4's flush, staining the bottom half like I did my porch, then run metal 4x4 posts and trex railing like I did on my porch a few months ago. Should be awesome.

Re: I was "that guy" today...

The stupid large hole you see on the end is where the auger got stuck. It actual bit into the tree root and refused to come out. Took an hour and a lot of energy to dig it out.

I didn't forget

The boards in those pics were up for setting the poles. After the concrete dried it was all taken apart.

It's a great grille. It's 5 years old, used A LOT, and still looks new (cover really helps) but the sides are really flimsy to lift on and it's heavy... no way I would have been able to get it out of there!

All I have left to finish is the actual decking boards and stairs. I took Th/Fr off last week and got a ton done. The railing is going to be $, so I'm going to hold off a bit on that for now.
